Note Donald Trump's specific mention of LGBTQ protection from Islamist terrorism in tonight's RNC speech, and the applause he gets:

His comments end with:

"... and I have to say as a Republican, it is so nice to see you cheering for what I have just said."

Only Trump could have pulled that off in a speech at the RNC. Watershed moment for GOP?

I doubt it. The LGBT community is a prized constituency of the Democratic Party. LGBT folks will look at the Republican platform, sponsored legislation, and constituencies like Evangelical Christians and just blow off his comments as nothing more than smoke and mirrors.

Donald Trump at RNC says he'll protect LGBTQ people from Islamic terrorism.
Who in their right mind would truly care about the LGBT vote? It is minuscule; the only thing that matters is the principle, that no matter who/what you are, Trump and Republicans are all about protecting Americans from terrorist threats.

Well no one on the rabid right for sure...

But the vote covers far more than the active, self identifying gay folks... it is the friends, fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters and co-workers who see equality for gay folks as pressing as any other minority. far from minuscule.

I see Trump's plan as protecting 'us' far more than our freedoms. Worries me a bit. I also see his concept of 'protecting' as fueling terrorism around the world and here at home... :peace

Exactly right on that portion of the far from minuscule point... it was the point I was also making in that he is smart, and fully American, to protect all Americans.

Not here to debate you on what you think is equality. We also most likely differ substantially on what fuels terrorism and how to stop vs just trying to ignore the problem. It does strike me that Pearl Harbor was a wake up call to most Americans of an existential threat... and yet 9-11 and continued terrorist acts still elude so many.

5% of the vote is a pretty huge block of voters.

Well first he used LGBTQ and not LGBT... which to me is a problem. You do know what the Q stands for to most in the crowd?

And secondly he only promised to protect them from Islamist terror... not the Christians in his own party that are the real problem.

The other 95% is much larger, I mean, do the math...ha ha ha.

51.1% (Obama) - 47.2% (Romney) = 3.9% Democratic Margin of Victory = Republican Loser and Future Crybaby

LGBTQ...

What does the Q cover that LGBT doesn't? I've wondered this.

Know how much of that 3-5% LBGTQRSTUVote Trump is liable to get in any event? But the sane ones, family and friends will understand he will protect us all, including the harmless deviants in the population.

No, more like this: hil1.jpghil2.jpg

if you watch it life there were some boos and it really didnt get much of a reaction till he followed it up. ANd he didnt say he'd fight for thier rights he made it about foreign terrorism.

While I believe Trum is fine with equal rights and millions on the right are factually also fine with equal rights he didnt really say anything about rights and the LGBTQ community. Unfortunately in a circus show like our current political events are a candidate could never talk about equal rightsTQ matters at "that event" at "this time" and it probably go well. thats sad since anti-gay doesnt represent them has a group but is only the loud mouth media attention grabbing nutters. His comment means basically nothing when it comes to equal rights. This is a totally extreme example but im just using it to make a point, it would be like telling slaves i wont let foreigners kill you. Just like at the DNC a person couldnt make comments about gun rights without doing it backhandedly or making it about another issue.

More fluff and hype .. so sad

So, Trump does not hate gays. Good. He is also not an anti-Semite (neither is Putin, for example). I am also pretty sure that Trump is not into drowning puppies for pleasure. SO WHAT?

You see (we are still legitimate ideological enemies, as usual, right?), this is it. This is the "moment of truth" and blah, blah, blah. We have arrived.

Trump is unacceptable. Period. He is the arrogance of blind executive power impersonated. If there was any doubt, his acceptance speech made it abundantly clear. "The sky is falling, and I am the Messiah". Been there, done that.

Honest conservatives (by the way, thank you, Ted Cruz, whatever your motivation may be), honest liberals and socialists - to say nothing about libertarians -
rejoice, here is your once-in-a-lifetime national-unity moment.

NEVER TRUMP.

Actually even though they do not hold a majority of said voters, they do have something called the log cabin republicans. Even though they do not hold enough votes to win an election, he may have seen it fit not to alienate them, even though he may not win the gay vote, he probably does not want to turn other voters away as being seen as anti gay.

If it's a watershed for a U.S. president to declare his intention to protect innocent people from terror attacks, then I suppose Trump set a precedent. I would hope that any president would value the lives of innocent people whether they be gay, straight, Catholic, or evangelical. Trump broke no new ground last night in protecting minority rights.

In the waning age of Emperor Obama and his fiddle-playing, yes it's highly unusual for an aspirant to the highest office to protect innocent people. Those in Munich today wish they could have been protected. Trump will rally the forces of civilization to protect the innocent, and to wipe out the new infestation of predators.

Yes since Americans are afraid of their own shadows most feel the need to be protected. It must be horrible to live in such agonizing fear. I feel sorry for you.

When Trump followed his comments with:

"... and I have to say as a Republican, it is so nice to see you cheering for what I have just said."

I feel that extra line did indeed say he was glad to see Republicans embracing gays as human beings and standing for their basic human rights, and he felt that this was long overdue.

For you stubborn skeptics of the GOP, vote Clinton so that she can import more Islamists who'll be happy to preach for and promote the extermination of gays. Libtards will pal around with the fireman in the morning and the arsonist in the evening, not seeing the contradiction. I see none of these "mainstream Muslims" calling for Muslim countries to repeal laws which criminalize homosexuality or execute people for being gay. I guess LGBT love for Muslims only goes one-way, and isn't reciprocated.

1.) I didnt at all since they didnt really cheer at all until he followed it up with the terrorist comment and he didnt say anything about embracing them as human beings and standing up for their human rights in any fashion.

Not to millions of republicans feel that way? absofreakinlutely! did his line show that in anyway what so ever? IMO absolutely not because there would be ZERO reason to associate LGBTQ with terrorism while making the comment.
Like I said it had about as much meaning to me as a slave owner saying only im allowed to beat you or a abusive husband saying it.

2.) well that doesn't apply to me cause im an independant and i correct both sides when they dishonestly and biased "group" ANY side together like they are one. Unfortunately you just proved thats you with your thinking of clinton wants to allow islamist in and use of the word libtard and you grouping all muslims all together. Your biased and dishonest views are part of the problem and not the solution. THanks.

That final line from Trump was not gratuitous. He made inroads into the Republican tent for gays - because Trump wants to enlist everyone from the civilized world in the fight against uncivilized savages. That's why people like Peter Thiel support Donald Trump - because they're able to keep sight of the bigger picture, the greater battle that has to be won here.

You know that these "diverse and liberal Muslims" might as well be fictional, for all the difference it makes. When it came time to be heard, they couldn't bear to offend their beloved Muslim family by speaking up in any meaningful way. They couldn't be bothered to campaign against Saudi's death penalty for gays. They couldn't speak up against any of the numerous illiberal crimes committed in their community - the way everybody else does! Your "diverse and liberal Muslims" seem to be practicing "stealth ilberalism" by disguising their liberal voices as the sound of crickets chirping. How ethical of them - NOT.

If Donald Trump was a person with a record that showed that he never backtracked on a promise or reneged on a deal, we can suppose that he might live up to this pledge. However, Trump has a long history of making promises that are to Trump's advantage at the moment and is followed by Trump reversing or reneging on his promises. His word means nothing and if you have any doubts, ask all those contractors that he made deals with and later stiffed.

It's more than that - it's the fact that he had the boldness to talk to a hardcore Republican audience about protection of gays being part of civilized values. He made inroads for gays into the GOP's big tent.

Yes, he "said" it knowing that most Republican voters aren't rabidly anti-gay. That was a calculation, not a sign of integrity.
