President Trump unexpectedly announced Thursday that his administration will send $200 discount cards to 33 million older Americans to help them defray the cost of prescription drugs — appealing to a significant voting constituency weeks before the November elections. The president tucked the announcement into a speech that he portrayed as his health-care vision, without including specifics about how the government would pay for it or which of the nation’s Medicare recipients would receive it. White House officials said the price tag, about $7 billion, could be paid for through an experimental program to lower Medicare drug prices that remains merely a proposal. The idea of a drug card was not mentioned in a briefing for journalists detailing highlights of the president’s planned remarks about two hours before his speech to an audience of health professionals and supporters in Charlotte.

One White House official, speaking on the condition of anonymity to be candid, said the idea of a drug discount card was a “last-minute thing that is still being worked out” and originated in the office of White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows. . . . The coronavirus pandemic has ratcheted up the salience of access to insurance and affordable care as shutdowns to protect people from infection have caused millions of Americans to lose jobs and the health benefits their employers provided. A White House spokesman said the drug discount cards Trump mentioned could be used to offset co-pays for the medicines of people receiving the cards. . .

In his remarks, Trump called the discount cards a “historic provision to benefit our great seniors.” He said 33 million people on Medicare “will soon receive a card in the mail containing $200 that they can use to help pay for prescription drugs. Nobody’s seen this before. “These cards are incredible,” he said, adding that they “will be mailed out in coming weeks.””

Yeah, let's not work with the Dems on a second COVID stimulus that might actually help. Have some cake crumbs instead. That $200 will buy you, I dunno, eight of the thirty pills you need.

The upshot is the probability of backfire.

He wants a card with his name on it. That’s it. HE is so stupid and has the worst political instincts, I think, ever.

If he had just done what you’re suggesting he probably would have been able to make the race closer. But it’s no good if he can’t take all the credit even if he has to take it cause no one else is giving it to him.

As usual he thinks his supporters are stupid. Don't get me wrong. They are. But he thinks his name on the cards will get him votes.

I wonder why his moronic fan base doesn't get offended at all of the insults he lobs at them.

I almost hope that Mr. Trump DOES get those gift cards with his name and picture on them.

The number of lawyers who would be fighting to see who got the honor of filing the lawsuits and criminal charges would be hilarious to see.

Will the USPS reinstall some of those dismantled sorting machines to make sure the payoff cards get to voters before the election? One problem with desperately throwing anything at the wall in hopes something will stick is that one crooked scheme can start to trip up another.

Trump to attempt hamfisted attempt to lure voters with gift cards

Wait, what? I thought spewing federal $$ money to poor people for votes was the cornerstone of the Democrat party. Now it's wrong because Trump's getting in on it?

He is also taking Platinum Loans to the African American community. He is desperately pandering, and it’s only for votes.

but using government money to campaign seems wrong

Trump is actually using the presidency and government funds. Bloomberg is using private funds

Still you have to love poor people getting gov't assistance don't you? Even if it's Trump doing it.

If I use it at a drug store can I buy vodka with it?

Trump also has a plan for the black community.

Trump has a plan for everyone. After 3 1/2 years, it is a bit too late for his grandiose plans, because that is all there is, plans, not done deals. Once again, Trump is proving that he thinks all his problems can be solved with rhetoric.

Let me know when you get your card and actually use it. I won't hold my breath.

Trump doesn't get to spend taxpayers' money without the permission of the House (Nancy Pelosi).

He has no intention of making good on this promise.

Strange that trump is willing to give money to the elderly that he has consider expendable since the beginning of the pandemic and wants to get money to Blacks whom he thinks are bunch of thugs and rioters and that the BLM is a terrorist organization. Strange times we live in.....

So last week the ITP (sane Trump posse) was all about COVID is no big deal because it only kills old people. Now you are defending giving old people money. I bet you complained about the mythical Obama phones as well.....

In a well organized and reasonable way, sure. This is not.

Cheating and bribery, Donald Trump our Traitor In Chief. Maybe when he loses he can move to Russia to be with his Master, as his 'friend with benefits', full time instead of part time, he'll bring his own supply of Trump brand KY.

As usual he's out for himself only, out for votes that will benefit him only. He doesn't give a **** about any Americans, seniors, people of color, etc. He's a spoiled, ignorant selfish bastard.

So, as far as you are concerned, that means that it's now perfectly OK for the "Democrats" (whatever that means) to do it because Mr. Trump is uning taxpayers' money to purchase votes - right?
