Trump officials portrayed the president as a calm leader throughout the pandemic

President’s allies blame China, corporate media and Democrats for lying and politicising the coronavirus

President Donald Trump’s allies on Sunday blamed anybody but him for his handling of the deadly virus that has killed more than 193,000 Americans.
In interviews across the morning political talk shows, Trump officials portrayed the president as a calm leader throughout the pandemic and singled out China, corporate media – including CNN and Jake Tapper, specifically – and Democrats for lying and politicising the coronavirus.

The chair of the Republican National Committee (RNC) and Trump advisers were asked about last week’s revelation that the president told The Washington Post’s Bob Woodward in February and March that the virus was deadlier than the flu and that he downplayed it publicly to avoid causing panic – something Trump continued to do well after his Woodward interviews.

RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel said the president has been calm, steady and methodical throughout this crisis, comparing his leadership throughout the pandemic to that of President George W Bush in the wake of the 9/11 attacks.
“Think of what would have happened if he’d have gone out and said: ‘This is awful. We should all be afraid. We do not have a plan,’” McDaniel told host Chuck Todd on NBC’s Meet the Press. “The president was calm and steady in a time of unrest and uncertainty. And I think history will look back on him well as how he handled this pandemic.”

Since we know from the Woodward tapes that Trump knew as early as January that this virus was going to morph into a deadly pandemic, he could have assumed the same leadership role as FDR did when he authorized the Manhattan Project in 1941. The prospect of the Nazis beating us to the A-bomb was as frightening as hundreds of thousands of Americans dying of this virus & called for the same balls-out effort to create vaccines & anti-viral drugs first. He could have pulled together the best scientists & the best pharmaceutical companies. But he didn't, preferring to lie that it was just going to away.

Had he done all the things you mentioned, it still would have fallen short, as coronavirus wasn't successfully managed or defeated anywhere in the world. Dems haven't given Trump credit for doing anything right, even when his policy decisions aligned with their beliefs, and now they want us to believe that they'd be singing his praises if he'd successfully managed to contain or defeat coronavirus? Yeah, ok.

Your first sentence is a BOIL.

The report is most likely accurate, but the funny thing about it is the source combination of "Politico" and "The South China Morning Post".

Technically you are quite correct about "defeated" and you might be correct about "managed" (albeit with a rather strong caveat on your definition of "successfully". However, the data does show that COVID-19 has been more "successfully managed" in other countries:

20-09-13 A3 - Comparison of Ratios.jpg

then it has been in the US.

I rather suspect that the reason why the Democrats haven't given Mr. Trump credit for doing anything right is roughly analogous to people not giving a paramedic credit for putting a bandage on the cut little finger of someone with a sucking chest wound. I rather suspect that the reason why the Republicans want Mr. Trump given credit for what he did do right is roughly analogous to people wanting to give a paramedic credit for putting a bandage on the cut little finger of someone with a sucking chest wound (and that is that they want everyone to overlook the fact that the paramedic didn't actually do anything effective about the sucking chest wound and the patient died as a result of that lack of action).
