Effort would install Trump ally at agency’s criminal unit who has drawn up list of investigative targets

Summary

  • The Trump administration is preparing changes at the IRS that could facilitate criminal inquiries into left-leaning groups and Democratic donors.

  • Gary Shapley, an adviser to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, is compiling a list of potential targets, according to people familiar with the matter.

  • The effort coincides with a broader administration initiative to investigate financial networks funding organizations accused of fostering political violence.

The undertaking aims to install allies of President Trump at the IRS criminal-investigative division, or IRS-CI, to exert firmer control over the unit and weaken the involvement of IRS lawyers in criminal investigations, officials said. The proposed changes could open the door to politically motivated probes and are being driven by Gary Shapley, an adviser to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.

Shapley has told people that he is going to replace Guy Ficco, the chief of the investigative unit, who has been at the agency for decades, and that Shapley has been putting together a list of donors and groups he believes IRS investigators should look at. Among those on the list are the billionaire Democratic donor George Soros and his affiliated groups, according to a senior IRS official and another person briefed on the list. It couldn’t be determined upon what grounds Shapley would seek to begin such an investigation.

Just another day and another move toward autocracy (not to mention getting the libs). MAGAs can rejoice!

Didn't Musk already reduce the IRS staff so the rich won't be audited as much? Now those that remain will be tasked with Trump revenge targets?

Whatever it takes to decimate the deep state is alright with me...as long as it's done legally. Which Trump is certainly doing.

Before Trumpers jump in and say the Dems did too....no they didn't. The right totally misrepresented what the Dems did. They were only investigating tax free status claims to ensure that the organization met the criteria for exempt status. . They were NOT targeting their tax returns as part of some criminal investigation.

Trump is good at disrupting the flow of illegal and/or misappropriated funds that drive democratic causes. Look what he did to USAID. Also remember, a right wing activist works on principle alone, a left wing activist thinks he/she does until they cut their funding. That's why they go from one issue to another. It's like throwing gum on a wall and seeing what will stick.

Remember when Republicans cut the budget to the IRS so there wasn't staff to enforce the law about non-profits doing politics illegally, so the limited staff tried to select groups with political names, and took action on zero right-wing groups, yet there was screaming from the right about government tyranny attacking the right for years?

Legally, yes. Fairly, no.

It's called vengeance, not justice, when you pick only your enemies or the other side to prosecute.
It's not about vengeance. It's about crimes.

Someone who finances domestic terrorists is committing a crime.

Who is financing domestic terrorists?

Or is any political action against Trump now deemed to be counter revolutionary?

Not if it's only Democrats who are investigated and prosecuted. Which is what is happening. That's vengeance or retribution.

I'm sure you realize this @Mycroft . It must be distracting to have to pretend ignorance of such things all the time. Do you do that at home and at work as well? Or is there some time in which you can actually use the full set of facts?

It's not just Democrats. There's plenty of Trump hating Republicans who committed crimes, as well.

So much for "eliminating weaponization of government"

Future lawsuits in the making.

He's using the IRS as a political weapon.

That's not doing things legally. But that's par for the course with Emperor Trumpatine.

Speaking of crimes, what about Trump's 34 felonies? He's already committed crimes.

That's bogus shit. He has committed no crimes.

Can't wait for the next Dem president to overhaul an agency and go after MAGA. Every one of them.
