Trudeau, who I have little regard for, probably explained to Trump that if he breaks another free-trade agreement, this time one Trump negotiated, Canada will seek other trade avenues. Since that NAFTA-USMCA fiasco Canada has signed agreements with the Asia-Pacific alliance, that Trump bailed on, and the EU.
Canada doesn't sell consumer goods to the US, not much. What we sell the US is raw materials, oil and parts for vehicles.
Tariffs against Canadian products will harm American companies, which won't be allowed by the people Trump answers to.
Trump doesn't care about you anymore. You can't do anything for him. What Trump cares about now is the wealthy, influential people who can do him and his family some good. Which is why nothing effective will be done about illegal immigrants and why tariffs will focus on consumer goods and by-pass raw materials. And oil.
