Trump said before leaving for a trip to New York that "what I want is total transparency." Something must have changed his mind, Sarah Sanders hasn't had a press briefing in more than a month and I don't think we're going to see another one for a long time.

President Trump said Tuesday that he directed White House press secretary Sarah Sanders “not to bother” with press briefings because he believes that reporters are rude to her and that most members of the media will not cover the administration fairly.

“The reason Sarah Sanders does not go to the ‘podium’ much anymore is that the press covers her so rudely & inaccurately, in particular certain members of the press,” Trump said on Twitter. “I told her not to bother, the word gets out anyway! Most will never cover us fairly & hence, the term, Fake News!”

The freedom of the press, protected by the First Amendment, is critical to a democracy in which the government is accountable to the people. A free media functions as a watchdog that can investigate and report on government wrongdoing. Free press is a vehicle for ordinary citizens to express themselves and gain exposure to a wide range of information and opinions. Trump tried hard to eliminate Jim Acosta from the press briefings, remember? Well, Trump lost that battle in the court. So now the only option Trump has to keep his dirty secrets out of the press is simply not to have press briefings.
