President Trump, who barely two years ago proposed a vast expansion of oil and gas drilling in U.S. continental waters, on Tuesday made clear there is at least part of the nation’s coastline he is eager to protect: the crucial electoral battleground of Florida.
Trump on Tuesday announced plans to extend a moratorium on oil drilling in the eastern Gulf of Mexico, an area that includes the Sunshine State’s west coast, as well as the Atlantic coasts of Florida, Georgia and South Carolina.
The move marks a stark reversal for Trump as he seeks to shore up votes in the tightly contested state ahead of the Nov. 3 election. For a president who has spent much of his first term working to expand U.S. oil and gas drilling and scale back Obama-era regulations on the fossil fuel industry, the move also underscores the political reality in Florida, where Republican governors have opposed oil exploration off their shores, fearing it could imperil beaches and harm the tourism-dependent economy.
The president’s announcement Tuesday came amid a speech in which Trump portrayed himself as a fierce protector of America’s natural resources and a steward of the environment.
“Environmental protection is a sacred obligation,” said the president, referring to himself as a “great environmentalist.”
So somebody said, "Hey Donald, maybe we shouldn't do this in hurricane alley." and Donald says, "You know what, maybe you are correct."

How dare Trump reverse his stance!
I would think the Trump hating cultists would be happy that Trump listened to others' sound advice.

With demand down and the price of crude below $35 a barrel, there is no need to expand drilling.
You are mocking a common sense action.

I would hope Trump lovers could notice that he does whatever suits his own needs
As do most presidents. DACA?
Oh, I'm betting your forgot all the things Obama did to suit his own needs.
Whatev...
Bingo!
This was done to keep the price up for his oil donors.
Oh wait, is Obama in a close election in Florida? Normal Trix diversion.
1. Hurricanes did not just become a consideration. He was all for drilling in 2018
2. He did not express that as a reason in his statement.
Good try.

Faced with a very close election battle in Florida, and standing by his marvelous property in southern Florida, Trump has suddenly seen the light and decided offshore drilling is not very good for his election prospects or property values. The change in attitude from 2018 to 2020 is dizzying.

Comic Relief: The president calls himself a "great environmentalist and protector of natural resources:
For those who cannot access the Washington Post, another link:
In major reversal, Trump moves to block offshore drilling
he began the speech with committing to "protecting the majestic beauty" of the beaches and shorelines
Trump wants off shore drilling, bad Orangeman.
Trump changes course and wants no off shore drilling, bad Orangeman.
How many times in the last month has Biden changed his position?
Yep, Biden now realizes there are riots being committed by his voters.
Lordy! The histrionics with some of you liberal progressives on this forum---sheesh!!!!
Offshore drilling in Florida is pretty much opposed by BOTH political parties in Florida. Their concerns are over protecting the Florida tourist trade having in the past been adversely affected by oil spills. Some of you make it sound as if suddenly Trump is pandering to Democrat voters on this issue, when it is an issue which Florida Republicans feel strongly about too.
So welcome to politics! Candidates generally don't try to get elected by pissing off everyone. Something clearly Hillary had not learned to do when she threw West Virginia voters under the bus.
You dems are so desperate to create a narrative right now two months out. NOTHING is sticking, can't you see that? Comedy gold!
He did say that. He also said that he was concerned about the environment. Why didn't he say that? He said he was concerned about the environment.
non sequitur[ non -sek-wi-ter, -toor; Latin nohn -se-kwi-toor ]Bingo! This was done to keep the price up for his oil donors.
Perhaps we will see next year or the year after.Of course it’s a common sense action, politically and policy wise. But Trump would propose drilling on Liberty Island or the Grand Canyon if it wasn’t a problem politically.
