President Donald Trump has ordered federal agencies to look for ways to restrict funding to Democrat-led cities, an unprecedented use of federal power that legal experts say is extremely unlikely to be upheld in court.

“It is imperative that the federal government review the use of federal funds by jurisdictions that permit anarchy, violence, and destruction in America’s cities,” Trump says in a five-page memo released late Wednesday and addressed to Office of Management and Budget director Russell Vought and Attorney General Bill Barr.

The memo comes as Trump, trailing Democrat Joe Biden in polls, seeks to shift the national focus away from his administration’s failed response to the coronavirus pandemic and toward racial justice demonstrations against police brutality that have occurred in cities and towns across the country this summer.

Some of the protests have turned violent, offering Trump an opportunity to present himself as the “law and order” candidate, much the same way he did in 2016.

The White House memo represents an official, taxpayer funded escalation of the criticism Trump has been leveling at Democratic mayors and governors for weeks, as he tries to blame them for a rise in crime and violence this summer in some cities.

The official title of the memo claims state and local officials are allowing harm to be done to their cities: “Memorandum on Reviewing Funding to State and Local Government Recipients That Are Permitting Anarchy, Violence, and Destruction in American Cities.”

According to the memo, federal agencies will be given two weeks “to submit a report to the Director of OMB detailing all federal funds provided to Seattle, Portland, New York City, Washington, D.C., or any components” of those four cities -- all of which have Democratic mayors who have criticized the president in the past.

Trump seeks to cut federal funding to what he calls '''anarchist jurisdictions'''

What a lunatic and petty man.

They are having issues with riots in some of those cities, but really this is nothing more than political retribution. Dementia Don wants to pretend to be a Don and that's how he runs his administration.

Tough love. Get your **** in order or suffer the consequences.

Such anti-American bull**** you. Trump supporters are a waste of air. Good riddance to them when they die. at least then they make America better.

Bull****. Complete bull****.

Why isn't Minneapolis on that list? Or Milwaukee

Oh, wait. Washington and Oregon are states where Trump has no chance of winning in November. Wisconsin and Minnesota are somewhat close.

Cancel this dumb president and his unlawful behavior. This is not the Hunger Games or Game of Thrones.

Vote Trump's corrupt ass out of DC.

Federal tax money should not go to cities like that. If anything, they should have to pay extra taxes to compensate the rest of us for putting up with them.

Pay extra taxes? LOL! Fake *** conservative.

Because those governors called out State Police and National Guardsmen

Dems seem to be growing some balls lately.. So when/if they take of over when tornadoes and hurricanes rip through those godless red states, I want the Dem prez to tell them to F'off and go begging for money from Texas, or where ever.. Not a dime from DC or the Blue states, we're tired of paying their way..

So you're OK with the President determining whether a city has their **** in order, and if in his opinion or the opinion of his minions they do not, cutting federal money? He's targeting NYC over actions in May and June and because DeBlasio seeks to cut the NYPD budget. So if a red city cuts the police budget does that put federal money at risk, if Pres. Biden doesn't like the Mayor, who opposed him in the election, and so designates that city as an "anarchist jurisdiction"?

So it's the president's responsibility to decide which state governments are not implementing strict enough Covid-19 measures and presumably do something about, but it's none of his business when state and city governments are failing miserably to stop months of riots and he wants to do something about it?

Do I have that right?

Should that apply to the net-taker Red States? Should Red States have to pay extra taxes to make up for the fact that Blue States subsidize them?

We do. Blue cities and blue states subsidize all that useless red territory. You know that map Trump and friends like to parade around, a map of 2016 election districts colored red/blue inexplicably by county? Well, the blue districts on that map constitute TWO THIRDS OF OUR GDP.

You’re welcome.

TDS in its final stages.

Well, it is true to Trump Form: when something goes wrong somewhere in your organization run away from it.

That's why businessmen like Trump file for bankruptcy repeatedly....they run into problems and the obvious response is to NOT FIX THEM but abandon them.

Instead of helping these cities, or helping ease people's upset over social injustice and police shootings he makes things worse with his rhetoric, further divides the nation and then retreats to Mar a Lago where he can fiddle while the country burns.

This is a VERY good question. Those of us in the Blue States have for SO LONG been carrying the Red States who take more in federal money than they pay in. But it is still something we should do. One must always help those incapable of helping themselves.

There ya go mr. president; kick em while there down.

The weird thing is: these are STILL US CITIES...so he's actively working against the people he swore an oath to work FOR.

Two things on that. 1) Something tells me your contribution to this supposed 'subsidy' is zero so you shouldnt be taking any bows. And 2) if you are now arguing that it is a bad thing for the rich to subsidize the poor, then I am willing to join you in bringing that to an end

Yes. The Trump Algorithm States clearly:

IF something = good
then
output: tweets announcing how good you are at everything

Else
then

Quite the contrary. It is the democrat mayors and governors who have abandoned the people and turned their cites over to mobs. NOt quite sure how you missed that.
