Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) had credible reasons to believe he could help negotiate some kind of resolution to the ongoing government shutdown. Not only does the GOP senator enjoy close ties to Donald Trump, he’s also played a key role within his party on immigration policy, having helped craft the bipartisan “Gang of Eight” bill.

With this in mind, when there was scuttlebutt on Capitol Hill this week about Graham working behind the scenes on a possible deal, it was at least worth watching. Yesterday, however, those efforts collapsed – because of White House opposition. Politico reported:

President Donald Trump has rejected a plan proposed by a bloc of Senate Republicans who had hoped to break an impasse over the government shutdown, leaving Congress and the White House with little obvious way out of the extended battle over Trump’s border wall.

On the 20th day of the shutdown, the GOP group tried to jump start bipartisan talks before Trump declares a national emergency to get his wall. But the president rejected their idea to allow congressional committees to sort out his border wall request while the government reopened, deeming the idea likely to leave him with nothing to show for the shutdown.

Some of the relevant details of the plan remain elusive, but by all accounts, there was a proposal on the table. Vice President Mike Pence and acting Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney took it to the president, who balked.

:doh Please remove this idiot.

So.....what was the deal? Are you sure it was one Democrats would have accepted?

You aren’t listening. No barrier funding no budget. That doesn’t mean budget in exchange for spending another 20 years talking about the barrier in committee.

This is not how faithful Democracy works.

Choosing to irresponsibly allow government services to lapse in to order to extort your opposition to change their votes, is not only unacceptable politics that shouldn't be tolerated, it's downright un-american in its morality.

So.....what was the deal? Are you sure it was one Democrats would have accepted?

Are you suggesting Trump turned down the deal because he was worried it was too extreme and the Democrats wouldn't have accepted it?

The point it... Trump is such a terrible negotiator and so extreme he can't even work with his own party during a crisis he invented to get something done.

No wall, no deal, period! Staying strong, unlike past republicans, including the RINO's currently sitting in Congress. :)

These idiots haven't figured out this yet, Trump is not to be bullied like past Republican Presidents!

How about kicking the can down the road for 40 years, where does that line up in your "moral" approach to governance? ;)

I completely disagree. Legislation requires the President’s signature and he’s under no obligation to do that for nothing.

Likely a first step towards a dictatorship, or at least the end of our democracy. Creating crises where none exist & holding 800K people ransom in order to fulfill a silly campaign promise is totalitarianism.

I'm saying that the article you linked to doesn't include any information whatsoever on what the "deal" entailed. It's rather impossible to hold a valid opinion on whether his rejection of the deal was good or bad if there are no details regarding what was up for agreement.

The 'deal' is pass CRs, yet again, to end the shutdown adding 30 days of 'negotiating' time. Never mind the 21 days (and counting) of 'negotiating' time that have already passed since the shutdown began. It's simply more "kick the can down the road" nonsense - as congress takes off for another long weekend break.

Extortion isn't "negotiating".

Extortion isn't "negotiating".

Extortion? How is the President personally benefitting from this shutdown? You do know what the legal definition of extortion is, right? ;)

And? Where is information about Trumps wall? I haven't seen anything on that aspect.

Why would any responsible Congressperson just fork over $5.6 billion for a dubious project with no published specifics and parameters?

Extortion: the practice of obtaining something, especially money, through force or threats.

It's the only style of "negotiating" trump knows since was born with a silver ladle up his ass.

The only thing that matters is that he couldn't strike a deal with his own party. He is obviously the problem here.

We should not negotiate with hostage takers. We did in the past, and now because we have, it's now accepted as the normal thing to do when democracy doesn't go the way they wanted.

If we reward the hostage takers, we can count on them using it like their new toy from now on.

They do it on a daily basis;why should this 5.6 billion be any different?

No, but it's how someone with no negotiation skills, no knowledge of the issues being negotiated, and who is too lazy to acquire the necessary knowledge, works.

Throwing red meat to his base (that would include you, unfortunately). That is how he's benefiting.

You aren't listening. We don't negotiate with hostage takers. It's been Govt. policy for decades. If Trump wants his pet project he will do it like every other President has. Make a deal with the opposition that satisfies both parties to get the votes.

Yes, and this applies to Trump exactly how? What is Trump, the man, personally receiving from this? Jesus, dude, by your whimsical definition, ANY legislation bargained for like ever is by way of extortion. ;)

In short, your mind is very small, or completely suffering from TDS that it is incapable of clear thought.

WTF? There's already 600 miles of wall built. We know what it does and doesn't do.

Ah, I see, so is this also true of any legislator that gets federal money for their state, or constituents? In other words, hold out until they get what they want? Ya know, how it's done in congress for oh I dunno, like forever.. LOL

You guys crack me up..:lamo

That's just pure political bias. I mean, really?
