From CNBC:
Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido declared himself interim president on Wednesday, while hundreds of thousands of Venezuelans poured onto the streets to demand an end to the socialist government of President Nicolas Maduro.

In a statement minutes later, U.S. President Donald Trump recognized Guaido as Venezuela's legitimate interim president.

The opposition has been energized by young congress chief Guaido, who has led a campaign to declare Maduro a usurper and has promised a transition to a new government in a nation suffering a hyperinflationary economic collapse.

Guaido, in a speech before a cheering crowd, took an oath swearing himself in as interim president.

"I swear to assume all the powers of the presidency to secure an end of the usurpation," he said.

He has said he would be willing to replace Maduro with the support of the military and to call free elections.

The Trump administration told U.S. energy companies it could impose sanctions on Venezuelan oil as soon as this week if the political situation worsens, according to sources.

Maduro was inaugurated on Jan. 10 to another term in office following a widely boycotted election last year that many foreign governments described as a fraudulent. His government accuses Guaido of staging a coup and has threatened him with jail.

For once I agree with Trump's foreign policy, Maduro needs to go, he has completely destroyed the country.

It's about that time....Next Maduro will use military force to end the "insurrection". This is what eventually happens when you allow your government to disarm you.

Guaido is as socialist as the rest of them. This isn't an improvement for Venezuala. The new boss is just as socialist the old boss.

Maduro does need to go, but what Trump has done here is wrong. Lets put it this way.. how would you feel if countries started to recognize Pelosi or Clinton as the rightful leader of the US?

Also this guy who now claims he is the new president.. instantly lost legitimacy in the country. The US is toxic in the country and Trump is double toxic.

People forget that Maduro is democratically elected and does have a lot of backing in the country.

And in return, Venezuela just broke diplomatic ties and expelled our diplomats - closing the embassy!

I'm not so sure it's a good idea to directly voice support for Guaido. Granted, Maduro is a bad apple and expressing displeasure with him is fine for Trump but directly supporting someone else is a little premature and could backfire badly if Guaido all of a sudden starts marching people into the street and shooting them in the head.

If you want to suspend reality you can believe that Maduro got 67% of the vote. I'll never believe they voted for the status quo.

Well, he had a lot of help. Maduro is a Chávez-loyalist, and has been following the “socialist policies that Chávez developed”. It was Chavez's delusional policies that included the expropriation of privately owned industries that led to the mess that is Venezuela.

I understand that the Venezuelan government has now discharged its entire body of people concerned with running elections and that all Venezuelan political parties have dissolved now that the President of the United States of America has the sole authority to determine who governs Venezuela.

Didnt Trudeau also agree with Trump? I thought I heard most western nations were as well.

What a terrible thing for Sr. Guaido to do. Why the next thing you know he will cut off all oil exports to the United States of America which, as everyone knows, is, under international law, justification for tossing him out of office and installing an absolute monarch in order to preserve freedom and democracy.

Here is the link:

Global Affairs confirmed Canada will recognize Guaido in the role. U.S. President Donald Trump issued a statement doing the same, and encouraging other Western governments to recognize Guaido as interim president. Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Guatemala, Paraguay and Peru indicated they too will recognize Guaido.

Reports from someone who is actually in Venezuela and has the inside scoop on what is actually happening are always appreciated.

He did, and he was just as wrong to do so as any other country's leader was/is.

The only people who have the right to "recognize" a non-elected person as the leader of their country's government are the people of that country. This is what is known as a "revolution" or a "coup" (the difference being the number of people involved).

Canada and the US have the right NOT to "recognize" a government because that would be an INTERNAL matter, but they do not have the reverse right.

If the positions of Messrs. Trump and Trudeau are correct, then Canada would have the "right" to "recognize" Ms. Clinton as the President of the United States of America and Mr. Trump would have the "right" to "recognize" me as the Prime Minister of Canada. Both of which are - I believe that the technical term is - "really stupid".

LOL - @ "questions raised" :lamo

Yeah, most definitely and you are way too kind, it was widespread condemnation.
Maduro was threatening to use the military to tamp down opposition votes, just for starters.

Quit being so melodramatic.

Trump isn't declaring anyone the President of Venezuela. He's merely recognizing this guy as the new leader and not that pondscum who has run the country so far into the ground, it's people can touch the Earth's core.

Democratically elected? Come on Pete.

You know that ain't right. One was elected by a minority with an overly represented but extreme political minority.

Guaido has the support of the legitimate legislature and Maduro's election was not legitimate.

Didn't your President say your electoral process was rigged? Yeah, I'm sure he did. That and your intelligence agencies are like Nazi Germany. Oh, and your judicial process is corrupt. Your President said those things about the USA and here you are citing 'possible election fraud' in Venezuela.
What a third-world ****hole, huh.
