Donald Trump is poised to start withdrawing troops from the US-Mexico border as early as this week, according to a report that prompted instant criticism that their deployment was a political stunt.

The US president spent the final weeks of the midterms election campaign whipping up fears of a migrant caravan travelling through Mexico towards the border. He sent in around 5,900 troops to prevent the “invasion” but, once polls closed, talked far less about the issue.

Well, what a surprise. Trump using US soldiers as propaganda pawns in the midterms? Say it ain't so.

Not really using, but okay then. We still have a number of people running around down there and this is just business as usual at this point.

Ted Cruz and other deep red republicans also exploited the caravan to get re-elected. If it wasn't for the caravan I think Beto O'Rourke would have won. Cruz won by a very very narrow margin.

This sort of racist BS has worked in other countries too. The rightwingers in Australia have won elections by demonizing muslim and black asylum seekers.

I hope he doesn't since there are thousands of migrants in Tijuana trying to get across the border.

They are making a mess of the town, so something needs to get done one way or the other.

Anyone remember Trump talking about using the military to build the border wall?

Trump Suggests the Military Might Build the Border Wall March 25, 2018
https://nypost.com/2018/03/25/trump-suggests-the-military-might-build-the-border-wall/

He sent troops down recently with orders to do something exactly like that, set up effective barriers at major crossing points, and that is exactly what they did over the last month.

They've been working to improve border barriers, and now most can withdraw back to their home bases.

Perhaps you don't care about your own ignorance as long as it gives you a chance to "get Trump".

Moving on...

All that money and time wasted on a cheap stunt to try to get the rubes to vote for republicans...

A lot of them never made it south of Tucson.

From the article:

Army lieutenant-general Jeffrey Buchanan, overseeing the mission, said the first troops will start heading home in the coming days as some are already unneeded, having completed the missions they were sent for, Politico reported.

“The returning service members include engineering and logistics units whose jobs included placing concertina wire and other barriers to limit access to ports of entry at the US-Mexican border,” the website added.

Perhaps they are done with their jobs, unless anyone expected them to _______(fill in the blank)

" 'CBP has been and will continue to prepare for the potential arrival of thousands of people migrating in a caravan heading towards the border of the United States,' said Pete Flores, Director of Field Operations in San Diego. 'These preparations include training exercises, deploying additional CBP personnel, and partnering with the U.S. military to harden our ports of entry and the border area between those legal crossings into the U.S.'

"Department of Defense personnel are installing concertina wire, and pre-positioning jersey barriers, barricades, and fencing as requested by CBP under Operation Secure Line."

Trump just can't make you guys happy. The razor wire is up. The extra barriers are in place, The tent cities are built. The caravan has been funneled to one location. The majority of the military's job has been completed. Now let the majority of them go home for Thanksgiving.

Those were Marines in the video, not soldiers.

And U.S. Marines used as a working party to do what civilian agencies should be doing for themselves is insulting. Your argument hinges on the idea that without hardened combat trained Marines, the sand bags would remain empty.

It was not a smart use of the military and it was absolutely a political game to please small minds.

...so that the civilian agencies that are supposed to do that can keep not doing it? This was not the military's job.

And while you are choosing to be obtuse, why don't you ask yourself what two years of GOP-led Congressional and Executive power has done to reform our immigration laws. Aside from raging about the fantasy of a wall, exacerbating bad policies, and "deploying" the troops to fill sandbags, they have done nothing. So, the question you should ask yourself is what the hell do you think you are actually supporting? Because Trump, a man who thrives on the idea that he is tough on immigration, has done largely nothing.

There are Marines and Army...both active duty and reserve. You don't need to get picky about it.

The US MILITARY is there to support law enforcement. Now...you may think that's not smart. Fortunately, you don't make the decision. Trump does.

They did their job. They (some of them) are going back home. That's how it should be.

But it's not a political game. The migrant issue is very real...very serious...and it is ongoing. (even if the media won't tell you about it)

Oh, because law enforcement is not up to doing their own job? Sounds like a civilian problem, not a military one, and especially not an Active Duty one. Their job is to deploy abroad, kill the enemy, and return. For this, Defense receives tax-payer funds. It is the Border Patrol's (among other agencies) job to deal with the borders. THAT is how it should be. If the Border Patrol is underfunded, then two years of GOP-led government did nothing to address it. Sending in the Marines as a temporary working party is either proof that the GOP failed to fund the proper agencies or that this was entirely political. And I will go further:

For something that is "real and ongoing," two years of GOP-led congressional and executive power didn't seem to amount to anything. In the meantime, Trump will go on filling your head with the notion that he cares about a wall or that he is tough on immigration. And as soon as Trump actually does something to address the need to reform bad immigration policies, he will get my acknowledgment. Before this happens, he is merely exploiting your exaggerated fears of illegals. And now, he has even attached "patriotism" to this game as FOX News glorifies the military for being good little laborers as civilian agencies stand by and watch.

Perhaps it is unfortunate that people with fully functioning brains and at least an ounce of integrity aren't leading this country and making the decisions.

Regardless your opinion, the US Military...even active duty...do a lot of stuff to aid civilian agencies. Are you equally against the Air Force helping to fight forest fires?

That propaganda is propaganda. Trump cited the "invasion" of people who are still hundreds of miles away from the border as the principle reason he was sending the troops there. Of course, the election is over, and the caravan is still hundreds of miles from the border. Why is Trump withdrawing the troops now, while the "invasion" is still on it's way here? Easy answer. Because Trump was using the troops as pawns for his propaganda. Nothing else. The sick son of a bitch just blew 200 million in taxpayer money to feed his own sick ego.

Oh, no, this is not bull****. It's not the military's job to help border patrol fill sandbags for a brief moment. "Fighting" a forest fire involves an actual fire. The military was never going to "fight" a caravan. They were put on the road to the southern border for Trump's election needs as he promoted the idea that their ROE's was going to be about shooting rock throwers. In the end, the military was exploited and used as a temporary and insulting working party to try to legitimize Trump's "deployment."

Do you feel better now that you vented your "hate Trump" "hate GOP" nonsense? Now you and the left have your chance to make things right. Let's see how it goes, eh? (I won't be holding my breath)

You people don't get to play this game now. Isn't it you all who rage and rage about illegals? Isn't it you people who declare that Democrats are weak on immigration? If Democrats were/are "weak" on immigration, wasn't it up to you crusading conservatives to save us all and do something? Well, after two years of congressional and White House power, all this GOP/Conservative blustering came to nothing.

Perhaps if you weren't so busy excusing Trump and seeking ways to further build your tower of worship, you would see that you, yourself, should be a bit outraged. Because, long before he exploited the military for his political gain, he was exploiting your fears of illegals.

BZZZT!!

Wrong.

There are thousands from the first caravan, alone, in Tijuana right now...with four more caravans still on their way.

Seriously...you should find some sources of news other than the mainstream media pukes. They aren't telling you the facts and it makes you look stupid.

So Trump sent 5,000 troops to the southern border, spending around $200,000,000 and the time of literally thousands of our soldiers, in the hopes of political gain?

Not to mention separating them from their families for no reason at all.

That's not what Trump was telling everybody before the election. He lied to you, and of course, you believe every word he says. Either that, or you just say he didn't say what he said. You are very transparent in his defense.
