Trump during the SOTU 2018.

2/6/19
President Trump operates in the moment, where every encounter necessitates that he be perceived as the winner. Insofar as his words have no relation to action and his aversion to facts is so strong, he will say practically anything to get himself out of a jam. Hence, we saw him claim ownership of the shutdown because in that moment, facing adversaries and performing in front of the cameras, he thought that might help him look like a tough guy. Sometimes Trump’s outbursts are spontaneous and others planned, but they are invariably ill-conceived. He operates in a world of mobster rhetoric and movie-style dialogue in which words only have to sound tough. Logic is immaterial; thinking through the consequences of his threats is unimaginable. So it was at Tuesday’s State of the Union, when Trump uttered this bizarre statement:

  • An economic miracle is taking place in the United States, and the only thing that can stop it are foolish wars, politics or ridiculous partisan investigations. If there is going to be peace and legislation, there cannot be war and investigation. It just does not work that way. We must be united at home to defeat our adversaries abroad.
As a preliminary matter, the economy and investigations are unrelated — unless the latter turn up evidence of massive misconduct, fraud or criminality that might temporarily upset the markets. But that, of course, isn’t a reason not to investigate where circumstances warrant. Markets recover, while Trump’s presidency might not in such a situation.

Moreover, how is Trump’s scenario supposed to work? Congress passes a bipartisan infrastructure bill and, what, Trump won’t sign it while the House investigates potentially unconstitutional emoluments? Congress passes a wholly popular drug cost-reduction bill and Trump vetoes it because Congress is investigating his inhumane family-separations policy? Trump’s threat is an empty one, and one that serves to highlight his inability to stop investigations rather than his ability to withstand them — or confidence they won’t amount to anything. Democrats know Trump’s bluff is absurd, and his congressional allies know it, too. Only the lowest of his low-information base thrills to the sound of his words. Ultimately, as is so often the case (with the wall and shutdown, most especially), Trump’s own supporters will be disappointed. Like Scarlett O’Hara, Trump perhaps thinks he’ll worry about that another day. For the brief satisfaction of spitting out a nonsensical soundbite, Trump sets himself up for embarrassment and disappointment. In many ways, that is the story of his presidency. A man entirely ignorant about policy and governance playacts his way through his presidency, using language that dense people think is smart and ignorant people imagine sounds erudite. The problem for Trump remains — reality.

Well said. Another foot-in-mouth Trump soundbite in which he paints himself into a political corner.

Since when does Trump ever paint himself into a corner? He either just denies he said something previously or ignores that he said something previously and does what he wants anyway.

So...this "corner" is based on what? Speculation? It's based on the notion that something "might" happen?

No...that's not a corner. A corner is where Pelosi is at. She cannot negotiate with Trump or she will lose support of her entire left-wing base.

He is hardly in a "political corner" the speech polled overwhelmingly well, and the video's of snarling and pouting democrats will be in Trump's re-election ads.

BTW, since you are so interested in investigations, Google "Judicial Watch" to see another investigation going on. The democrats may face justice yet.

That’s a good one! :2rofll:

Pelosi demonstrating to Trump how much time he has before the walls begin crashing down upon him. ;)

She can posture and spout rhetoric all she wants, but the fact is she doesn't dare try to work a deal with anyone but her fellow Elites...Rep and Dem. If she so much as looks like she's working a deal with Trump or anyone who supports him, her base will revolt against her. That puts her in a little box that is bound by the constraints of the left-wing nut job part of her base.

And...she put herself in that little box.

^^ One persons opinion.

Another persons opinion; Pelosi can absolutely work with Trump on any issue that he’s willing negotiate over. The majority of Americans want action, period.

And yet, when he's willing to negotiate for wall money, her only answer is "No".

But seriously, do you think her base would be happy with her if she DID try to make a deal with Trump for wall money? What's your opinion about that?

We all know that the battle isn’t over whether or not Democrats will authorize large sums of money for improving border security. They have, unanimously. And they’re ready to do it again however, because Trump made building “the wall” the centerpiece of his campaign, vilifying Mexican’s (and others from South American countries), saying “When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best. They’re not sending you. They’re not sending you. They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people.”, and has continued that same lying, hateful rhetoric there’s no way that the Dems will give him one penny for anything he can get away with calling his “wall”. Not gonna happen. If Trump were to stfu about a “wall” and strictly stick to talking about border security improvements the Dems would be throwing $ at him. Yeah, it’s semantics, but it’s damned important semantics to Trump and Pelosi.

Oh, for sure. That's why Nancy is in such a pickle. Her base is hung up on spin and semantics. They think that's more important that dealing with the humanitarian/security crisis on our southern border.

It's all about "hate Trump" and there's nothing she can do about it...except say no.

She's doing fine negotiating with republicans. This left-winger doesn't mind. She can even negotiate with Trump for all I care, so long as she doesn't place too much trust in his commitments.

No trust is needed. You put the terms of the deal in the bill. Once its passed and signed into law it's a binding agreement.

Continue crafting a narrative that best fits your perspective if you like, but realize that pitching it to informed people is a waste of your time. Best to save those fairy tales for other equally self deluded Trump supporters.

She is in a box, but she didn't put herself there. Trump put her there by trying to leverage a government shutdown to get his way and failing. Now Pelosi can't compromise on the wall because the democrats can't reward hostage taking.

So: Pelosi's inability to negotiate with Trump would be his doing, not hers. And if she doesn't negotiate with Trump and he doesn't get his wall, it will have been his own fault. That is Trump painting himself into a corner and Pelosi having her hands tied by his incompetence at negotiation.

Demanding a measure of decency in discussing a complex problem is not spin or semantics. Nancy and the republicans had been trying to deal with the problem before Trump began caging children. (If she really wanted to be creative, Nancy should have countered Trump's fear-mongering by having parents who lost track of their kids as guests at the State of the Union. The publicity might even have resulted in a reunion.) Trump's consistent problem is that he loses support by demonizing people, e.g., his Middle Easterners in the caravan comments. (How are we to take as a constructive, serious comment rather than hate-fostering?) Most Americans and all Congresspeople understand complexity.

Grow up, Donald.
