Trump orders FEMA to halt payments to California as wildfire recovery continues

Jan. 9 (UPI) -- President Donald Trump said Wednesday that he ordered the Federal Emergency Management Agency to cut off relief money for California as the state recovers from the deadliest wildfires in its history.

"Billions of dollars are sent to the State of California for Forest fires that, with proper Forest Management, would never happen," Trump tweeted Wednesday. "Unless they get their act together, which is unlikely, I have ordered FEMA to send no more money. It is a disgraceful situation in lives & money."

An estimated 86 people died in the Camp Fire in Butte County north of San Francisco. The fire burned 153,000 acres in November, destroying 14,000 homes, 528 commercial buildings and 4,300 other structures. That includes the entire town of Paradise.

Trump's announcement comes three days after California Gov. Gavin Newsom was sworn in and, with one of his first acts, signed new legislation that modernizes the way the state responds and prepares for natural disasters.

COMMENT:-

Obviously California doesn't need any money to help with the destruction caused by fires because the fires are out and the damage has already been done so there is no "emergency" to "manage" and that would mean that it would be illegal to re-purpose funds that Congress has said should be used to "manage emergencies" to "helping those left-wing, liberal, pinko, socialist, commies who wouldn't vote Republican whatever you paid them to do the way that the so-called 'Democrats' pay them to 'Vote Democrat'".

Right?

Or is Mr. Trump just being petty and childish?

Is the state responsible for federal land management?

Trump was right: California’s forests have been grossly mismanaged

https://www.fresnobee.com/opinion/re...221683150.html

Trump is right. We do have a management problem on the state, federal level and local levels (in that order). This can be broken down into six key areas where we have failed: Access, logging, grazing, endangered species, water quality and air pollution.

Mismanaged, overcrowded forests provide fuel to historic California wildfires, experts say

https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/p...es-experts-say

Neglect and mismanagement have left western U.S. forests overcrowded, firefighting experts say, leaving them more susceptible to the kinds of major wildfires that are currently ravaging California.

“Our forests are dramatically overcrowded,” said Krystal Beckham of the Little Hoover Commission, an independent California oversight agency that has called for major changes in the state's forest management practices.

“There are some places where there may be four times as many trees as there should be,” Beckham said. “When you have trees that close together, they can’t get the water they need, so they are more susceptible to drought, insects, and disease. And when they start dying, they become a terrible fire threat.”

Actually, even California says Trump is right about the wildfires

https://nypost.com/2018/11/20/actual...the-wildfires/

President Trump’s critics are belittling him for not buying the lefty narrative that global warming is to blame for the California wildfires. Instead, Trump points to decades of mistakes by government agencies that caused the woodlands to become overly dense and blanketed with highly flammable dead wood and underbrush.

He’s exactly right.

Just ask California officials. Two months ago, the state legislature enacted a measure that would expedite the removal of dead trees and use “prescribed burns” to thin forests. In other words: the very same reforms that Trump is now being mocked for proposing. The September law followed a Gov. Jerry Brown executive order earlier this year that also called for “controlled fires” to improve forest health.

So the appropriate response where money is needed to rectify past mistakes is to refuse to provide the money.

Yep, makes a whole lot of nonsense to me.

Great glad you are happy with what the president ordered! ;)

He's trying to make the wall issue go away because he knows he's already lost it, but he can't back down because, as he said, "because then I'd look foolish." Also, to back down risks letting public attention go back to the investigations into him, his campaign and his administration.

Solution? Throw his base red meat by reminding them that Californians are their enemies and not their fellow Americans.

So if they're enacting the reforms he demanded then what is his excuse for denying FEMA money to a state which already pays more in taxes than it gets back from the federal government?

And we have a winner.

I'm not sure if you did not run your mouse (while holding down the left mouse button) over the (suspicious) space between the word "of" and the word "sense" in my post or if you actually got my point.

I believe that the reports that California had "enacted the reforms" was carried by the MSM, so the only "logical" conclusion that Mr. Trump could draw from that is that California had NOT done so. After all, everything in the MSM is a deliberate lie - isn't it?

Is FEMA funding the correct pathway to rectify mis management of national forests?

Since it would appear that the California legislature has already taken the steps needed to "rectify" the situation (assuming, of course, that you can trust a single word that you read in the lying, left-wing, dishonest, socialist, untrustworthy, pinko commie so-called "MSM") then the money is to help IMPLEMENT the measures needed to "rectify" the situation.

On the other hand, why should California, which is one of the richest states in the United States of America expect the other (and, obviously, not so rich) states to pay to rectify a situation that the California government deliberately created. I mean does California think that OTHER PEOPLE should pay for its own mistakes? Why that's **C*O*M*M*U*N*I*S*M** when you expect other people to simply give you money just because they have it any you want it - isn't it?

While I do agree the problem have come from California mis management the FEMA fund are for emergencies and as such their is always reduction in their funds once the situation has been handled. Since most the clean up is done whats is left for FEMA to do?

Other than wondering if "most of the cleanup is done" is actually an accurate statement, I really don't know what is left for FEMA to do?

You do realize that two thirds of public land in Cali is Federal, right?

California is controlled by the liberal environmentalist, you can't pull a weed in California let alone clean out dead brush in a fire zones. California prefers death of its citizens over clearing brush from a fire hazard.

Same with all their illegals that they let go without deportation, why, because they want to protect illegals over the deaths of their citizens by illegals. A young police officer was shot to death by and illegal a couple of weeks back and they could care less. Why, because they don't like the police and they like harboring illegals that kill people.

Yeah a non sequitur to you. You could give a damn how many people are burned to death because CA will not provide fire protection from it's forest. You don't care how many people are killed, raped, stole from, underage girls being sold to the sex trade, drug runners, etc etc committed by illegals. Christ you give safe harbor to these illegal alien criminals. It's all OK with you as long as your not one of the victims.
