Trump mulls executive order that would ban companies from using Huawei, ZTE: Reuters

U.S. President Donald Trump is considering an executive order in the new year to declare a national emergency that would bar U.S. companies from using telecommunications equipment made by China’s Huawei and ZTE, three sources familiar with the situation told Reuters.

It would be the latest step by the Trump administration to cut Huawei Technologies Cos Ltd [HWT.UL] and ZTE Corp, two of China’s biggest network equipment companies, out of the U.S. market. The United States alleges that the two companies work at the behest of the Chinese government and that their equipment could be used to spy on Americans.

The executive order, which has been under consideration for more than eight months, could be issued as early as January and would direct the Commerce Department to block U.S. companies from buying equipment from foreign telecommunications makers that pose significant national security risks, sources from the telecoms industry and the administration said.

While the order is unlikely to name Huawei or ZTE, a source said it is expected that Commerce officials would interpret it as authorization to limit the spread of equipment made by the two companies. The sources said the text for the order has not been finalized.

COMMENT:-

If the concerns of the Rural Wireless Association are justified, then the US will experience a significant boost to its GDP because of all of the money that has to be spent ripping out and replacing their equipment.

This is what is known as a "Good Thing For The American Economy" since the Chinese will have to pay for it.

Right?

PS - Did you know that the fact that no one can find any hidden secret stuff in the Huawei and/or ZTE equipment absolutely **P*R*O*V*E*S** that that secret stuff is hidden in the Huawei and/or ZTE equipment?

Wasn’t there a recent action by the Trump Administration favorable to ZTE?

I suspect this is a tactic from the Trump administration. Think of it as a subtle shot across the Chinese bow to encourage them to take the upcoming talks seriously.

When Obama used his EO pen the Right wingers heads exploded because of dictatorial Obama, etc. But of course now even with a GOP Congress those same Right wingers have no problem with Trump's EO's.

Sorta...

ZTE, Trump, and China: Here's What the Fuss Is All About

ZTE is one of China’s leading makers of Android phones and wireless-network equipment. The company had $17 billion in revenue last year and, in March, a market value of $24 billion. That month, the company admitted to illegally exporting technology to Iran and North Korea in violation of U.S. trade sanctions. The U.S. Commerce Department fined the company more than $1 billion. At the time, ZTE vowed to reprimand employees who violated the sanctions.

Instead, the company fired a handful of employees and gave bonuses to others responsible for the violations. In response, the U.S. banned U.S. companies from exporting components necessary to ZTE’s survival. The components include everything from Qualcomm chips to Google’s mobile operating system.

The move was effectively a death sentence for ZTE, which a few weeks later announced it was shutting down. Shortly after, President Trump tweeted he would work with Chinese president Xi Jinping to reverse the ban, since it would lead to “too many jobs in China lost.” ZTE employs 75,000 workers and says it has business operations in more than 160 countries.

Seems this has been an on-again/off-again relationship since March 2017.

I'm not sure, are you attacking Trump, defending Obama, or something else?

Wouldn't this infringe on Commerce .... that God of conservatism?

He was calling you guys hypocrites. Like you don't know that. Your entire ideology is nothing but hypocrisies.

I'm pointing out the hypocrisy and phoney Cons.who spewed hate at Obama for his EO's but now have no problem with Trump's EO's.

I understand that, what is your position on EO's?

Still creating narratives for others, tsk tsk. Here is the difference between me and you: I ask questions when I don't know something and I very rarely express a dogmatic position. You on the other hand, spew all sorts of nonsense accusing others without any evidence and assume everyone else is a hack.

As far as EO's, they are a tool of the executive to clarify gaps in the law, often, those gaps are by design of Congress within legislation and all the ones I've ever read utilize the Constitution or relevant (to the Executive) laws.

If you continue to call me a hypocrite, I request that you provide a single example on these boards. Just one. Put up, or whatever...

You are tarred by the same brush I'm afraid. You have to take the good with the bad. You at least need to admit that the politicians you support are hypocrites and you are silent.

For the past eight years, Republicans skewered President Obama as an "emperor" who acted outside of his "legal authority" for the executive orders he issued from the Oval Office. Now, they are cheering President Donald Trump as he issues a raft of his own.

Trump has signed a dozen executive orders in his first few days in office, tackling everything from rolling back the Affordable Care Act’s mandate to beginning construction on the Southern border wall to freezing federal hiring. Some Republicans cheered him on, while others, charged with overseeing and investigating executive oversight, have remained silent.

Sen. Jeff Sessions, who is now Trump's attorney general nominee, called Obama "emperor" for his use of executive action on immigration. He has not commented on Trump's dozen presidential actions.

House Speaker Paul Ryan condemned Obama's executive orders, calling a handful he issued a year ago aimed at reducing gun violence "a dangerous level of executive overreach." Following Trump’s immigration executive order signed Wednesday, he expressed support.

Not a simple example of something I posted where you can call me a hypocrite, what a load of warm spit.

Go sell your straw man on someone else.

So you have decried the hypocrisy of the Republicans who for 8 years called Obama and "emperor" for his EO's and now applaud Trump for writing even more of them? Care to point out some links to you doing that?

All you have is straw. One person wisely pointed out to me that if you begin a sentence on DP with "So", you've got nothing. I took that to heart. Clearly you weren't that person.

Again, if you have a single post from me that you can accuse me of hypocrisy, I'll either defend it or apologize. Just one. If you don't have one, perhaps you should move on and stop looking foolish.
