He arrived 20 minutes late.
Then presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump addressed the House GOP's rank and file in a standing-room-only meeting at the Capitol Hill Club in Washington. He talked in broad strokes about the Supreme Court, trade, tax reform, securing borders, Saddam Hussein and how the media has been unfair to him. And the Constitution -- but more on that in a moment.

For some already skeptical members, the meeting–which had been billed as an opportunity to finally let the rank and file get comfortable with their sometimes bombastic nominee–left a lot to be desired.

"It's awkward. It's really awkward," Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) said when asked what it was like to sit in a meeting when the nominee doubled down on his stump speech line that Saddam Hussein had killed a lot of terrorists. "There is a lack of enthusiasm. You can feel it."

Kinzinger said that at one point, Trump had used the Saddam story as just one
example of how the media has treated Trump unfairly.

Rep. Charlie Dent (R-PA) said that members asked about his effect on the House and Senate races. One member asked pointedly about Trump's comments about Hispanic voters.

"He said Hispanics love him," Dent said, noting that the polls showed no such thing. "All I can say is that I haven't endorsed him. I believe he has a lot of persuading to do."

Another Republican in the meeting who declined to go on the record so he could speak candidly told TPM that Trump was asked pointedly if he would defend Article I of the Constitution.

"Not only will I stand up for Article One," Trump enthusiastically stated, according to the member in the room. "I'll stand up for Article Two, Article 12, you name it of the Constitution."

The Republican member said that Trump's lack of knowledge about how many articles exist, gave him "a little pause." (The Constitution has seven articles and 27 amendments.)

"There wasn't a lot of substance, and I think at some point we got to get to substance in the most significant political position in the world," the member said.

Good god... :doh I cant tell if this is funny or scary. But hey, congrats GOP here is your **** candidate. Hillary is a bad candidate, but Trump is just pure dog ****.

In his Senate meeting today he was actively insulting some of them. So progress at least.

Go Trump. These people need to be insulted and fired.

thats unfair, asking the donald if he would support article one of the constitution .... he obviously doesn't know what the hell that is. What would be the point of asking him that question? He's running for president he doesn't need to know whats in the Constitution, he's got people for that kind of thing

That is so true. It is just as much a "gotcha" question as asking Sarah what newspapers she reads.

He makes W look like a Mensa candidate. I honestly can't think of a dumber person to get this far in a major election.

If this article is true, it's freakin' hilarious!

Two items in particular stand-out for me.

This:

And, this:

Another Republican in the meeting Rep. Mark Sanford (R-SC) told TPM that Trump was asked pointedly if he would defend Article I of the Constitution.

"Not only will I stand up for Article One," Trump enthusiastically stated,
according to Sanford. "I'll stand up for Article Two, Article 12, you name it of the Constitution."

"Hispanics love me, and I'll fight for article 12"! :lamo

"Take me Lorne Micheals - I'm yours! I'm the best thing that happened to you since Sarah freaking Palin"! :lamo

How about we give Obama one more year in office and we start this nominating process again? Maybe we could get Biden v Bush or Sanders v. Rubio. ANYTHING but Trump v Clinton. Americans deserve better than this.

We do, but we let the orgy of anti-establishment sentiment **** the whole thing up!

This is the situation that we deserve, we let it happen.

Clinton's great. It will basically be eight more years of Obama, but a bit more hawkish.

In his Senate meeting today he was actively insulting some of them. So progress at least.

"I am the other senator from Arizona, the one who didn't get captured, and I want to talk to you about those kind of comments". I am not a fan of either Arizona senator, but I still had to applaud that. Trump predicting Flake would not get re-elected in November, when Flake is not even up for re-election this year just made it better.

Old dubya was actually extremely smart, and could have been mensa material if he applied himself. Most of the bush is dumb theme comes from his speech impedement, not his actual transcripts. granted his daddy had big bucks to get him there, his collage records show he was extremely smart and talented, but just did not give a ****, sounds pretty reasonable for anyone young going to college, party first education second.
