Up is down: Trump lies that Biden would 'destroy' Obamacare's protections for pre-existing conditions

9/11/20
Washington - President Donald Trump told one of the most absurd lies of his relentlessly dishonest reelection campaign on Thursday. At a campaign rally in Freeland, Michigan, Trump claimed his opponent, Joe Biden, "will destroy your protections for pre-existing conditions." Trump went on to say that he would himself preserve these protections.

Facts First: This is not only false but a complete reversal of reality. The protections for people with pre-existing conditions were created by the very Obama administration in which Biden served as vice president -- as part of Obamacare, the 2010 law Biden has vowed to preserve and strengthen if elected President. Trump, conversely, has tried repeatedly to get bills passed that would have weakened these protections. He is now trying to get the entirety of Obamacare struck down by the courts.

Trump has made a vague promise to protect pre-existing conditions through some kind of executive order. He has not explained how this order would work. He has also generally promised to unveil a health care plan that would replace Obamacare, but he has not done so; while he said it might be released by the end of August, it still hadn't arrived as of September 11.

Regardless, his claim that Biden will destroy the protections is absurd. We give candidates some latitude to make predictions about what their opponents might do in office, but it's laughable to claim that Biden would eradicate a widely popular achievement of his own previous administration. The Affordable Care Act includes several protections for people with pre-existing conditions. It prohibits insurance companies from denying people coverage or charging them higher prices because of pre-existing conditions. (These protections do not apply to short-term health plans, which have been expanded by the Trump administration.) It requires insurers selling Affordable Care Act policies to individuals and small businesses to cover 10 "essential health benefits," which prevents insurers from omitting critical categories of care from plans offered to patients with pre-existing conditions. It also forbids insurers selling individual or employer plans from setting lifetime limits on coverage of these essential benefits, reducing the chance that people with serious conditions will hit a cap while they still need care.

Again -- Trump is lying his fat ass off. In 2017 Trump and the Congressional GOP tried to pass bills (AHCA/BCRA) to replace Obamacare, bills that did not include protections for those with pre-existing conditions. In addition, the GOP bills would have stripped healthcare insurance from 24 million Americans. Trump/GOP failed to pass their bills by 1 vote, that of former GOP Senator John McCain, which is one of the reasons why Trump hates McCain.

Today, Trump and 20 Republican Secretary's of State have a lawsuit in front of the Supreme Court asking the court to declare the ACA (Obamacare) unconstitutional. Doing so would kill federal protections for those with medical pre-existing conditions. What's worse, Trump and the GOP have nothing with which to replace Obamacare. In other words, everyone would be at the [non-existing] mercy of the large insurance companies.

Trump is in the constant state of lying projection. Accusing others of what Trump Himself does, but they don't. Trumplicans have been in court for some time, and still are, trying to get coverage for pre-existing condition eliminated as a coverage from Obamacare, most specifically for COVID. So, yeah, Trump does have a national response plan for the virus. And Trump can blame the Dems for trying to stop it.

in the meantime, Tweety has been actively trying to destroy pre-existing condition protections. this is just another projection.

His loathing of the American people is so complete and total. Unreal.

When does Trump not lie?

Republicans are, and always have been, for covering pre-existing conditions. It is far more sensible to have states decide how best to continue, vs. federalizing and enshrining in single-payer, government healthcare.
Lazy arguments following the same lazy accusations.

The GOP has absolutely not been for covering pre-existing conditions as even a cursory glance at their voting records, executive actions, and court filings would reveal.

And no, they don't simply want the states to protect those people. Whenever the GOP pretends to have an alternative to the ACA, they fall back on their old standby about selling insurance across state lines. Which has in fact had specific legislative language attached to it for over a decade (it's showed up in 8 GOP bills over just the last two sessions of Congress).

That language explicitly prevents states from enforcing their own insurance regulations within their borders. It lets health insurers pick a primary state whose insurance regulations it would like to follow; then that insurer can sell in any secondary state it wishes obeying only the rules of the primary state. If the secondary state has protections for pre-existing conditions, it can't stop insurers that have chosen a primary state with no such protections from entering its market and driving out of business local incumbents who follow its rules.

The goal, of course, is to allow (or force, really) states to deregulate each other by using federal authority to strip states of their ability to regulate their own markets. "Deregulate" here simply being shorthand for eliminating consumer protections like those protecting people with pre-existing conditions.

Pretending the GOP position is that the states should pass consumer protections on their own is false and absurd on its face.

The PPACA allowed keeping two very large "pre-existing conditions" (the actuarial risk factors of age and tobacco use) allowing 'base' medical care insurance premiums to increase by up to 300%. That, of course, does not matter to those individuals getting publicly funded PPACA subsidies (from expanded Medicaid or exchange policies) since others must pay that (inflated) premium cost - but allowed the insurance companies involved to continue to charge higher (inflated?) premiums based on actuarial risk factors (aka pre-existing condidtions).

This is why I chuckle when the Trumpkins talk about debates.

“Mr President, you have promised the AMerican people a heathcare plan has been “two weeks away” since the start of your term. Why have you continually failed to offer Americans proof that you will protect pre-existing conditions?”

OH he’ll just be cute and call Joe sleepy and we will all laugh and laugh and laugh! ;)

Then why has the GOP not blocked the lawsuits going after pre-existing conditions exclusion? Your states arguments is absolute bs, the current pandemic shows what horrific thjngs happen when there is nit a national plan.

<YAWN>.......More Goebbelsian lies.

<YAWN>.......More Goebbelsian lies.

Just because we're all used to "Goebbelsian lies" from Trump doesn't mean we should stop calling them out. Claiming he's for these protections when he's trying to destroy them is pure sociopathy.

Yeah, Republicans are for covering pre-existing conditions as long as the consumer/patient pays accordingly, and without any government regulations or oversight. In that way, America already has universal healthcare. You just have to have the financial resources to access it.

Serves a cancer patient right if they bought an iPhone instead of preparing properly for their own health.

IF I was evil like the MSM, I guarantee you I could make any headline I want to make Trump look like the devil. I could, if I was evil like they are, slant every story for a gullible populace to make it seem like black was white and up was down. This is what is being done today to poison the minds of society with hate. Once you get people to hate someone, as the Goebbelsian media has done, they will believe any bad story written and any slur mouthed. This is why you and others believe what they spoon feed you. Hatred consumes the minds of American leftists. Otherwise known as TDS. Just because someone writes a headline and a story doesn't make it true. These sort of hit pieces are written daily to instill hatred. The left is filled with rage over anything Trump. These twentysomething reporters find anything they can to twist and turn and I and many others have debunked them time and time again and are ignored because the left just wants to believe.

It is like me trying to convince an evangelical that Jesus rising from the dead is just an unsubstantiated claim.

My sister in law had a brain tumor. No insurance Never did have any. Had an operation that would have cost $250,000. Paid nothing. How did that happen?

If you go to the hospital you will get treated. If you don't have insurance you will get the bill. In fact if you have insurance you still will get a bill. If you don't pay it you will have a collection agency after you for the money. you will have a judgment filed against you. You could have your wages garnished. You could be forced into bankruptcy.

Now if you have nothing and qualify for medicade you are covered

Just because someone writes a headline and a story doesn't make it true.

Great insight. But this story is true. Trump and the GOP have been going after pre-existing condition protections for years. Via legislation, regulation, and litigation. If they win in court, pre-existing conditions come back.

County medical. NO ONE goes untreated for needed medical care.

Suppose YOU tell me how she got treated by the best surgeons at Cedars Sinai at zero cost?

How does Cedars Sinai pay to have the best surgeons performing free operations? Could it be state and federal funding?

had they actually forced through a health care plan when they had a chance, it almost certainly would have been a major step down. i consider it lucky that they didn't.

Of course! Is there anything more cynical than a Republican promising to do something about healthcare? It literally goes against their ideology.

Also, they’re suing to end it. Right now. Like, the direct opposite of what Trump is telling us he’s doing. Like he’s lying.

why not let me know when he is not?

Way easier to keep up like that.

Heeey the full line is “like he’s lying.” We can’t know. Like with racism. Can’t know what’s truly in someone’s heart.

Even if you hear them telling Bob Woodward in a recorded conversation.
