Incredibly, the former president may be even more powerful behind closed doors than he was out in the open. Why? Republican fealty.

The ex-President is showing that he doesn’t have to be in the Oval Office to damage faith in US elections and to trash truth, as his movement based on lies and personal homage takes an increasingly firm grip of the Republican Party. The widespread mistrust he continues to foster in the fairness of the US political system among millions of voters poses grave risks to democracy itself.

“It is just mind boggling to me that Republicans could be this way,” said Dave Millage, who was forced to resign his post as chair of the Scott County, Iowa, Republican Party after backing Trump’s impeachment over the Capitol insurrection...“He was attacking American democracy itself. Yet they are standing by him. It just astounds me.”
Yes. It astounds me too.

Demagogues gonna demagogue. People like Trump aren't unusual but what is unique is that in modern times he was able to do so well in a modern democracy. It's a good example of why it's important to be out voting. In the absence of reason passion can get the upper hand and pretty quickly mess up even the most stable country.

Yeah...it sucks when the party rank and file get pissed off at the people they placed in leadership positions...when the rank and file decide to correct their error by forcing those people out. At least, it sucks for those getting forced out. It's a good thing for the rank and file.

btw, this Two Party/UniParty political system we have going on isn't what made the US "the world's most powerful nation and its dominant democracy". It was the American People and our Constitution that did that.

People forget Germany was once the most modern, stable country in the world. Then Hitler happened.

From the OP link:

The secret of Trump's appeal from the start of his presidential campaign in 2015 was that he channeled the distrust many conservatives felt towards the Washington establishment and the political system itself. He gave people a kind of permission to believe in what they felt viscerally rather than facts and truth. His attempt to destroy trust in the electoral system is creating another false reality with a built-in belief system that is deeply attractive to his voters. The fact that none of it is true does not detract from the power of his appeal.

Republicans are in a catch 22. Either embrace Trumpian politics or become pariahs to the party. His reactionary populism resonated with too many voters...

Meanwhile Liz Cheney continues to move Kiven McCarthy's nose out of the way so she can shove her 3" stilettos up Donnie Rotten's butthole.

She ain't goin' anywhere Kevin. Even if you kick her out of leadership ( big big mistake) she ain't goin' anywhere and she won't shut up and adopt your NONSENSE.

Trump is a danger to Trumpers too. Trump whacko Brendan Hunt was convicted last week for threatening the lives of Congressmen and Senators on January 8th. He had taken the stand and claimed that he did it because he "believed Donald Trump" and thus THE BIG LIE. Keep it up Trumpers. You may find yourselves sharing a prison cell with your worst nightmare.

Wait, will they share a prison cell with Hillary Clinton?

"History never repeats itself but it rhymes." Attr. Mr. Samuel Clemens.

A number of democracies* in the past hundred or so years have been subverted into authoritarian 'Strong man' states. Examples of this that are presently evolving include Turkey, Hungary, Russia and Egypt. There are others. None of these change-overs were possible without support from a goodly percent of the population. [Ed.: and indifference from a goodly percent of the remainder.]

Study of just how it happened [Ed.: and is happening,] in these misfortuned nations discloses certain characteristics which form the fertile ground from which dictatorships grow. These include a lack of faith in the society's institutions such as the press and sections of the government itself. There is also a sense of entitlement lost. There are other indicators.

Regards, stay safe 'n well.

* Yes, Gotcha! Gang. I know the United States of America is a republic form of democracy.

Care to show that happening in the GOP? McConnell no longer a power within? Please explain why Liz Cheney is getting attacked by her own party.

Yea, its astounding you found a CNN fish wrap worthy piece of garbage

His populism got him there and seems to appeal to a significant number. The real threat he poses is the way he is undermining the democratic process with his continued lies about the stolen election. Once a significant number of citizens have lost faith in their democratic processes the door is open for autocratic strongmen to take over and control the thinking of the believers. I think that is pretty much where the GOP is today. Totally controlled by one man.

This party of Trump may do well in House districts in 2022 but I don't think the "new" GOP can win federally. I think it is going to take several losses at the National level for them to wake up and realize these Trumpian politics doesn't play with a significant majority of Americans.

People forget Germany was once the most modern, stable country in the world. Then Hitler happened.
germany was a ****ing mess after WW1, THEN Hitler happened.

if your going to recite history , at least get it right.

Yes, the Constitution. With it's elections. Something Trumpists don't respect.

Never seen a bunch of "adults" so afraid of one person.

Its so pathetic.
One person certainly is not.

One person certainly is not.

That is true, and look at how she is being treated by GQP. Crap, MCCarthy wanted to strip her of her committees because she dared go against Trump.

Liz Cheney is not the least bit worried about Trump. I expect she is going to be extremely vocal and hard hitting with the truth leading up to 2022 and 2024. She isn't afraid to lose her senior position or her seat. Some things just aren't worth selling your integrity for. She has guts and strong conservative principles, both of which are sorely lacking in most Republican politicians these days. Let's hope her voice and her strength will resonate strongly with those Republicans still capable of independent thought and who hold strong conservative values.

we respect every single piece of it, unlike progressive democrats who would rip out the 1st and 2nd amendments if they could,

Someone has to have an Edward R Murrow backbone and point out the emperor has no clothes.
