In a 'self-defeating and self-incriminating' slipup, Trump just indicated he installed Matthew Whitaker to kill the Russia probe

11/15/18
President Donald Trump on Wednesday indicated during an interview that he tapped former US attorney Matthew Whitaker to replace then Attorney General Jeff Sessions in order to rein in the Russia investigation. Speaking to The Daily Caller, Trump expanded on his thought process behind choosing Whitaker to take over as acting attorney general. "Matthew Whitaker is a very respected man," Trump said. "He's — and he's, very importantly, he's respected within DOJ. I heard he got a very good decision, I haven't seen it." He added that he "heard it was a very strong opinion," referring to the Justice Department Office of Legal Counsel's 20-page memo justifying Whitaker's appointment as acting attorney general until the Senate confirms a permanent replacement. Reiterating that Whitaker is "somebody that's very respected" — a claim that stands in contrast to many DOJ and FBI officials' views of their new boss — Trump said he "knew him only as he pertained, you know, as he was with Jeff Sessions."

The president then appeared to allude to the fact that he tapped Whitaker primarily to constrain the Russia investigation. "As far as I'm concerned, this is an investigation that should have never been brought," Trump told The Daily Caller. "It should have never been had ... It's an illegal investigation." He then tacked on: "And you know, it's very interesting because when you talk about not Senate confirmed, [the special counsel Robert Mueller] is not Senate confirmed." Whitaker has a long history of making controversial remarks about the Mueller investigation and has publicly mused about gutting the probe. Though he submitted to a DOJ ethics inquiry into whether he should recuse himself, Whitaker told Sen. Lindsey Graham on Thursday that he would not be stepping back from the investigation. "What is so unusual about Trump is that he publicly forecasts his motivation in a way that is self-defeating and self-incriminating," said Elie Honig, a former prosecutor from the Southern District of New York who specialized in organized-crime cases.

Whitaker is Trumps DoJ "Nunes". Trump discarded the recused Sessions to appoint a Mueller assassin, who says he will not recuse himself and the Mueller investigation is illegal (no, it isn't).

Amazing, and what is as bad or worse is that the GOP has made the decision to lash itself to Trump's ship of fools. Rather than attempt to make any corrective measures the GOP is determined to go down with the ship. And it will.

He touches Mueller and the gloves need to come off.

It cannot be tolerated.

What a dumb-ass.

Oh the horror! lol

yawn...

Let me know when Trump says he actually did make Whitaker "Acting" Attorney General to kill the Russia probe.

Until then, do me a favor, eh? Go peddle your spin somewhere else. Thinking people aren't interested.

Ironically, the investigation was started by Republicans.

How on earth would you know?

As expected, we have Trumper fools that are all hunky-dory until the roof caves in and we have a Constitutional crisis.

I'm so glad I didn't have to serve with such dimwits who are just fine with simply waiting for the lead parade.

Isn't it as equally possible Trump heard Whitaker's reputation after he appointed him and appointed him because Rosenstein had discussed wearing a wire on Trump and the next in line below Rosenstein is a litigator not an Administrator. Whitaker as Chief of Staff for the AG would uniquely qualify him to manage the office until a permanent AG could be found.

This just signals the end for the GOP. This just might be their last mistake.

Incorrect.

As long as such a sizeabke chunk of the American electorate is willing to support someone like Trump and the lies he spews, no chance it’s the end of the GOP.

Right wing Americans largely live in a bubble universe as it is, Trump changed it from bubble, to alternate.

Trump said publicly on camera last month, well before he appointed Whitaker, that he both knew him and Whitaker was a fantastic person. Records also confirm that trump and Whitaker met more than once while Sessions was still USAG.

The next in line to lead the DoJ is Rosenstein. But Trump couldn't have that because Rosenstein also won't fire Mueller on Trump's order.

Total lie. Trump has taken NO ACTION EVER against the Witch Hunt other than to disparage tits GLARINGLY OBVIOUS BIAS and asinine "Get Trump on Anything" purpose, far astray from the 2016 election.

Is it bad to be biased against people who commit crimes?
