Don't confuse YOUR viewpoint with those of other people. Social Security, Medicare, etc. are all very popular.
Apart from seniors living in the past, libertarians are living in the past, thinking back to the days before Social Security, when seniors mostly died in poverty and the days before Medicare, when no insurance company would insure seniors, as the good'ol days.
My side of American politics considers social net programs morally superior to the capitalism red in tooth and claw we had before the New Deal. Your side believes that people have a right to keep what they earn, and that taxing them to support others, no matter how beneficital, amounts to theft.

Gallup research shows that older Americans are extraordinarily dependent on Social Security. CBS News Poll. Jan. 17-21, 2014. (N=1,018 adults nationwide. Margin of error ± 3.) People were asked:
"Overall, do you think the benefits from Social Security are worth the cost of the program for taxpayers, or are they not worth the cost?" 73% said yes.
