"President-elect Donald Trump is considering nominating Republican presidential rival Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis as Defense secretary, according to two people familiar with the situation.

DeSantis would replace Pete Hegseth, whose prospects for confirmation appear to be dimming amid allegations of sexual assault and alcohol abuse.

A final decision has not been made, according to the two people, who were granted anonymity to discuss internal matters.

Bringing DeSantis into the Trump administration fold could help the governor’s political prospects given that he is term-limited and scheduled to leave office in early 2027 when it was anticipated he could run for president again. It would lead to the ascension of Lt. Gov. Jeanette Nuñez, who would be the first female governor of Florida and the first of Cuban descent."

Trump's pretty famous for high turnover of personnel, but one expects this sort of thing to happen after they are confirmed and have served long enough to evoke his ire.

Political suicide.

It helps clear the path to the Senate for Trump's hors- er, daughter-in-law.

That might be the quid pro quo since Trump is transactional but Trump (assuming he doesn't do a President Unknown from Civil War) is done. He walks into office a lame duck. DeSantis needs to think of his future and I doubt being fired by Trump a couple years (tops) from now is good for his future.

Pete Hegseth has to go. A Defense Secretary who is occasionally falling down drunk isn't someone you want around during an emergency.

DeSantis would be better off appointing himself to Rubio''s Senate seat. I still can't imagine Trump picking DeSantis.....he doesn't present well on TV but if he agrees to appoint Trump's DIL as the quid pro quo....maybe.

Told to keep going, keep fighting, Trump is behind him all the way, not withdrawing.

Lol.

So Hegseth crashes and burns, DeSantis takes his place, and Ronny appoints Lara Trump to Rubio's Senate seat.

If that happens, Tommy Tuberville will drop in the rankings to 2nd dumbest person in the Senate.

Draining the swamp

I figured if it happened it would be in exchange for his DIL getting the Senate seat. If he takes it DeSantis is way dumber than I thought. Both he and Rubio are likely to be unemployed sometime in the next year or so.

How do we know this isn't totally made up?
Trump stuck with Kavanagh he can stick with Hegseth.

DeSantis is a much better choice. I know this board finds no Republican qualified, but he was a governor of one of the largest states in the Union. He has executive experience running multiple agencies.

Trump could pretend to do an FBI investigation with regard to Kavanagh. He doesn't have that political tool as a President-elect.

He's not entirely used to being trump's lapdog.

Just don't make him an insurance commissioner.

Let the process play out. There is a procedure and it will work itself out.

Maybe Joe can just pardon Hegseth, and then all will be OK.

Sounds reasonable. This kind of appointment happens all the time.. Don't kid yourself.

A president-elect's daughter-in-law appointed to the senate is a little unusual.

Defense Secretary? What qualifications does DeSantis have?

Lara would do a great job. I am holding out hope that Matt Gaetz is appointed, though. Adam Schitt needs his nemesis. Matt could sit next to Susan and Lisa.
