Trump wants to not only run up the national debt but threatens to hurt millions of Americans over Christmas by shutting down the government. I agree we need to good border security but a 2000 mile long $50B White Elephant along a single border is not the best use of taxpayer dollars. A single issue is certainly not worth shutting down the government especially when both sides are willing to discuss alternatives.

President Trump clashed Tuesday with Democratic leaders Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi with the cameras rolling in the Oval Office, as the president insisted he's willing to let the government shut down if Congress doesn't approve funding for his U.S.-Mexico border wall.

I lived through every government shut down, there no big thing. Essential services are maintained, non-essential personal are given a vacation which they get paid for once the government is back up and running.

We've had something like 18 of these things, 14 of them between 1976 and 1986. That is more than one a year. Shutting down the government used to be a common tactic. But we finally got away from that. Sure, there are those who preach gloom and doom, but no gloom or doom happens.

It just a political trick, one party or the other trying blame the other for political advantage. Sometimes congress gets the blame, sometimes the president does. Ho hum, here we go again.

Last I checked Trump doesn't have the authority to cancel Christmas.

Basically. while we don't need 2k miles of physical wall we do need 2k miles of strong border security. We also need some real change to immigration policy and we need to beef up immigration courts. What Chuck and Nancy seem to be saying is the same stuff the open borders crowd always says..."let them in now and we'll give you what you want later". Well, that hasn't worked out ever so Trump is saying "my idea gets done first this time and we'll talk about yours later".

Sure seems fair and reasonable to me.

Too bad for the Dems this time. Trump is touting national security. The Dems, at least according to Nancy and Chuck, want to keep things the way they were last year and every year before. And THEY are the ones saying the government will be shut down. Trump is just saying, "so be it".

It's Unamerican and unconscionable for elected leader like Pelosi and Schumer
to deny Americans a right to have a Border wall.Trump should have asked why they would
deny and hold up government over a mere few Billion dollars.Trump should have asked
them what they have against a wall. But snake-in-the-grass Pols like Schumer already has
a answer for that down pat. It's a Lie of an answer. He'll state that a wall doesn't make us
any safer and that more security on the border will.Patently and grotesquely a Lie.Plus how
could he ever prove that Lie.We've never had a bona-fide wall.At least not the kind President Trump
will make sure and build.Walls work pretty good in Israel.
Sarah Sanders is spot-on right.Schumer and Pelosi want Open Borders more than Open Government.

Neither P nor S wanted to debate on TV. Why that might be transparent or something.

This is so doggone cartoonish.Explain what good border security has been.
That's the stock answer Lying Dems have been using ever since they made the decision they
Need those Illegals. They depend on their votes.Schumer as well Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama
voted in Bipartisan fashion in 2006 with legislation Under Bush 43.
The Secure Fence Act of 2006 which called for construction of 700 miles of fencing and enhanced
surveillance coverage.Bush signed into law.Why all the negativity by this Schumer thing to belligerently
refuse a Wall.Explain the sense in that.A wall might just be the ticket. In the least it's worth the effort.
Unless ... Border Security is Not a Priority for the Democrats.Making sure they have a new voter base is.
Like in ... Illegals.

Generally government employees get paid for not working, and they come out of shut-downs with even lower morale.....this is lose/lose....this is America not working.

More dopey talk. This So Called precious Government shuts down from 5 PM on a Friday till
9 AM on Monday every week. And during Holidays a few days longer.
Government employees get paid for following orders and/or pushing paper.
It's not like a Hospital or even a Fast Food joint.

**** Trump and his stupid wall. the Mexican government is going to pay for it anyway, so he doesn't need congress, right?

So you're saying the American taxpayers are going to pay for millions of government workers to sit on their butts and do nothing for weeks or months? Jesus F***ing Christ, what kind of Republicans are running the show these days?

Agreed. Another broken promise by Trump. Sad.

Back in '86 we tried to "fix" illegal immigration. Reagan was promised that if he allowed amnesty for those illegals already here the legislature would insure that employer restrictions on hiring illegals would be implemented as would stronger border controls. However, once Mazzoli and Simpson got the amnesty they wanted they failed to follow up on the rest. The result was that MORE people came over illegally because they knew Congress wouldn't do anything to them. Since then the general trend in congress has been to say you're tough on border security while actually not giving a rat's ass whether the border is secure or not. It's pretty much the McCain Immigration Doctrine.

From the sound of things, Trump wants the security implemented first and then will consider talking about revising immigration policy. It's the way things should go but there is just too much political capital out there to grab for any of the establishment hacks to actually do the right thing for the nation.

Pelosi
I was trying to be the mom, it goes to show you: you get into a tinkle contest with a skunk, you get tinkle all over you. It’s like a manhood thing with him — as if manhood can be associated with him, this wall thing.”

Acting the child like this was never the right way to deal with Trump, when are these idiots going to learn?

The nation is watching, so is the rest of the world.

Disagreed. It's still a Republican WH, a Republican Senate and a Republican House. Spin that it is the Democrat's fault all you like, but I'll bet a $50 donation to the forum that the Republicans will pay for any shutdown by American voters, not the Democrats.

No, that's not what Trump said. He said he'll be 'proud to shut it down' and he's been threatening to do so since he first took office. They aren't the ones saying it, no matter how much you wish they were.

There is no right to have a border wall.

Next absurd point, please.

Well, The Great Wall of Trump seems stupid to me and many others, and unfortunately Congress gets to fund spending. Trump still has a GOP controlled House and it's Trump's job to get a few Democrats in the Senate on board with his Wall. If not, let him shut it down and see how it works out for him as the talk of Christmas is Trump putting on a tantrum because he didn't get his way. Congress should be happy having their nice, long Christmas break interrupted.

LOL, Jesus christ, the dumb that comes from conservatives, who actually think mexicans are the cause of all their problems. A border wall is a huge waste of money, its so completely dumb, I'm embarrassed for the conservatives that actually think a wall actually will work, and not cost obscene amounts of money. But then again, its coming from people who cheer on pissing away trillions to murder brown people all over the world, so I'm not surprised

I've never seen that. I've been through all 18. Most that I've seen were happy to get a paid vacation. First as active duty military, then as a Department of the Army civilian. If anything, it those deemed mission essential that gets a bit peeved at the others for getting a paid vacation.

Your post has me very confused. I thought Trump was telling all those drooling idiots attending his Nuremberg Rallies that Mexico was going to build the wall. Was Fat Donny lying to the Neanderthals?

The government contractors (generally) must use their leave to get paid.

“The morale of government employees and contractors plummets with every shutdown.

Trump addressed that "Republican" thing. If the wall funding came to a vote today, it wouldn't pass because of the Senate. It would need Dem votes and the Dems won't vote for the funding.
