One of the first things the Trump administration did in Washington was to pack White House pressers with journalists from media outlets friendly to Trump and MAGA. That is why we rarely hear tough or embarassing questions from the WH press corps anymore.

Donald Trump used the Federal Communications Commission to extort the owner CBS/Paramount - Shari Redstone - who was seeking FCC permission for a $8 billion merger with Skydance. Content changes will be coming to the new merged company.

Trump is signaling his FCC to revoke the broadcast licenses of the ABC and NBC networks. This is how Russia lost its independent media. All independent networks/media were either closed or their staff fled Russia to avoid prison for criticising Putin.

Trump policies are deeply unpopular with Americans. To blunt on-air criticism, Trump is looking to either extort or force the closure of select broadcast networks. You don't see Trump demanding that the FCC revoke the broadcast license of FOX.

I personally wish there were some kind of standards for news shows. And that anything else be prominently labeled as entertainment. Wouldn't it have been great if there was a chryon that ran under Tucker Carlson saying, "the content of this show is for entertainment purposes only"?

Never going to happen.

I kind of hope Trump succeeds at this so Democrats have this as a precedent to shut down all far right news sources when they are in office.

Once again, broadcast networks do not have FCC licenses. Therefore, they will not have their licenses revoked by the FCC.

The FCC has been issuing television broadcast licenses since 1934.

I believe each of the local affilliate stations in the network must possess a FCC license. Normally good for 8 years.

Cable networks must negotiate with ASCAP for license terms.

Local affiliates have FCC licenses, networks do not. The FCC could pull the local affiliates' licenses, but only for over-the-air signals. Almost everyone is streaming these days. No one needs an FCC license to stream. This is the challenge for the Trump administration. How to shut down dissent in the Internet age.

ASCAP stands for the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers. It is a private entity designed to simplify the paying of royalties. It has no ties to the government whatsoever.

MSM wanted another Trump term. Their oligarchs wanted tax cuts, their execs wanted clicks and ratings. So I'm fine with Trump revoking licenses here. IT would turbo charge independent journalism that isn't in the pocket of GOP lobbyists. Cmon, TACO, don't taco out of this one.
