Trump administration announces plans to drill in Arctic National Wildlife Refuge

Interior Secretary David Bernhardt on Monday announced plans for an oil and gas leasing program in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, clearing the way for drilling in the remote Alaskan area. Bernhardt said future leases of the federally-owned land will make the entire 1.5 million acre Coastal Plain area available. Drilling in these controversial areas of the Alaskan arctic has long been controversial and the plans are certain to be met with legal challenges.
Environmental activists have sounded the alarm that drilling the Arctic could harm the environment and exacerbate the climate crisis. Climate change has been a key issue in the upcoming 2020 election, and Joe Biden, who is set to accept the Democratic presidential nomination this week, has called for a ban on new oil and gas permits on public lands. A 2017 law required the department to hold two lease sales in the refuge by 2024. A date for those sales has not yet been set, Bernhardt said on a call with reporters Monday, adding "I do believe that there could be a lease sale by the end of the year."

This Alaskan lease law was passed in 2017 when Republicans had majority control of both houses of Congress.

The world is awash in oil. There is no need to drill for more. This is yet another example of the GOP rewarding corporate campaign donors.

Like a typical liberal you cant see beyond the end of your nose. That there is enough oil today doesnt mean there will be enough oil tomorrow. And if we are going to drill for oil, the perfect place to do it is in the middle of nowhere.

Good for Trump

Oil and coal are yesterday's technology, much as Trumpism is yesterday's ideology.

No, oil is very much still todays technology and will be necessary for the foreseeable future. As for yesterdays ideology, that would be the Marxist/socialist idiocy being pushed by the mindless left.

So, you wanted to know what you're like? This response of yours I would say shows us. As a typical smug republican you blame someone for shortsightedness when you are the one with short sight. You don't mention pollution but infer for who knows how long into the future you are willing to burn fossil fuels for energy. Stop spending money to pollute when we can spend money to advance clean energy sources.

Money, pure and simple and that is the main interest. This is the kind of stuff you support.

Comic book bad guys.

Even the Saudis understand the oil is running out and have embraced new technologies.

If I was an oil drilling company, I'd hold off until after November 3rd. If Trump wins, drill baby drill. But if I go in and start drilling anyway and then Biden wins, I know all the money I invested in drilling infrastructure will have been for nothing.

Most Oil and Gas companies have either halted or drastically reduced new drilling due to the price of crude and natural gas, simply not economical. And yes they might want to wait, before they get set up there will be a regime change and it is very doubtful they will ever get to do any drilling.

No one is pushing "Marxist/socialist" idiocy. You're just making up new definitions for old words.

How is what I wrote 'smug?' What it was was factual. We will be using fossil fuels for the foreseeable future. Pretending otherwise, as you liberal so often do, is living in a fantasy world.

LOL. What planet are you posting from? Obviously one that doesnt have the Squad, the Bernie Bros and their army of mindless, anti-capitalist drones pushing fringe, kook leftist ideas like the Green New Deal. Or the Marxist rabble rioting in the streets of our major cities every night with the support of leftist political leadership. No, nothing to see here...

You are still using words you've made up definitions to. Socialism is government ownership of the means of production. What industries have Sanders or anyone else nationalized? You seem to be railing against ideas that simply don't exist.

Take that up with those who call themselves socialists. BUt to Marx, socialism is the transitional phase between capitalism and communism, so its a spectrum. Pretending such ideas dont exist is insanity.

Bernie calls himself a "Democratic socialist."
Think Denmark, you know, the non **** hole country Trump would like to see more people come here from. Don't think North Korea. That's not social democracy.

It's not a spectrum.
