These include youth violence prevention programs, research on preventing gun injuries and deaths and efforts targeting diabetes, chronic kidney disease and tobacco use, according to the report.

I remember one time I heard an air bag go off outside my apartment. There was a drunk crying lady revving her engine over and over trying to get her car to move, even though her front wheel was facing straight sideways where it had hit the fire hydrant. I told her, "you know, your wheel is facing straight sideways, so this isn't going to work". She kept revving. I said "You should get out and have a look". She kept revving. Another guy from the neighborhood came out and said the same thing to her, with some kind of car-jargon meaning that the car wouldn't move because the wheel wasn't connected. She kept revving.

In the back of my mind I might have had some vague notion that I could help her. I mean, I dunno, maybe she could walk back to her house, talk to her husband, say she had a drink or two there to steady her nerves? Of course, any notion to put a drunk person on the road wouldn't really be very humanitarian of me, would it? It never became relevant. I saw a cop come up the road behind her, and I started to retreat, saying "Time for the cop to do his job." I hung just close enough to tell him I didn't see the accident, and gawked from a greater distance as her ran her in for the DUI.

The U.S. is like this. Vroom, vrooom, vroooooom! Time for the cop to do his job. A million, ten million, a hundred million, how much of a sentence will it take to restore a little decency or science or common sense? But we have to think, did we really have a better plan? Disease is the cop, and he has work to do, with our respect.
