Unless of course those Russians become truckers -- in which case Trudeau will want them carpet-bombed

Trudeau Says Canada, NATO Need to Avoid All-Out War with Russia

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Friday his government does not want to see an escalation of the Russo-Ukrainian war that would pull NATO forces into "direct conflict" with Russia in eastern Europe.

Speaking to reporters at a transit announcement in Mississauga, Ont., Trudeau said Canada and its allies are focused on delivering economic body-blows to the Russian economy as payback for the invasion — and are not going to establish a no-fly zone over Ukraine.

A NATO-enforced no-fly zone would mean Western forces would be responsible for keeping Russian warplanes out of the skies over Ukraine. That could result in direct combat between NATO forces and the Russian military — a dramatic escalation of the war.

So far, Western countries like Canada have been imposing sanctions and sending lethal aid to help the Ukrainians carry out their own fight against Russian President Vladimir Putin and his troops.

Xi is the one to worry about. Putin is a thug. All this talk about nuclear war is pure 100% BS.

Well, yes, it's probably a good idea unless we feel like flirting with the end of human civilization.

Though, an article I read today made a good point: there's reason to worry that Putin will use small tactical nukes to cow Ukraine if he doesn't get his way. Does that trigger MAD?

Some of the smallest that have been designed are equivalent of 72 tons of TNT or 20. aka 0.072 Kt and 0.02 KT. What exactly do we do if Russia fires some of those off?

It'd be a pretty damn big explosion. Our largest used conventional bomb, MOAB, clocks in at 11 tons TNT equiv.

No way. The Chinese play the long game and nuclear annihilation doesn't fit the model.

Xi? Xi won't nuke anyone. Xi wants to make sure as many people as possible in China are happy. Don't you know that?

How much is Putin paying you?

Why do you keep lionizing Joe McCarthy as your hero and role model? Why keep parroting his rhetoric?

Technically no.

Yes because the last thing NATO wants is the US military trashing their countries on the way through to stomp Russia. That we should avoid. The Chinese are looking down at their shoes everytime we look their way. The Pentagon is ready to set up a no fly zone, or whatever else might be “necessary”.

Only if they are used against the United States of America.
Some of the smallest that have been designed are equivalent of 72 tons of TNT or 20. aka 0.072 Kt and 0.02 KT.
You seem to be referring to the "Дэви Крокетт" [1] which the "Американская армия" [2] took out of service in 1971.
What exactly do we do if Russia fires some of those off?
Good question. Another good question would be "How did they get them out of "Соединенные Штаты Америки" [3] - wouldn't it?
It'd be a pretty damn big explosion. Our largest used conventional bomb, MOAB, clocks in at 11 tons TNT equiv.
And attempting to deploy the "MOAB" when there is an actual air force available to shoot down the cargo aircraft that it has to be carried on is a real "crew replacement enhancer".

Joe McCarthy? Who the heck was talking about him? I just want to know if parroting Putin's propaganda is really so profitable that it's worth selling out your country to do so.

sanman:

Okay, your opening line was very funny, despite the very, very serious nature of the topic which Mr. Trudeau was talking about. Thank you for the spark of levity in these very dark times. Do you think that the 63 Km long convoy north of Kyiv, which is going nowhere, is a truckers' protest? Or perhaps a Russian Army mutiny?

All humour aside, there is no way NATO countries will directly confront the Russian armed forces invading Ukraine unless Russia attacks a NATO country or countries, moves against Finland or Sweden, uses nuclear weapons in Ukraine or causes a nuclear disaster in Ukraine or begins a genocidal programme against the Ukrainian people.

If Russia does any of the above acts, then all hell will very likely break loose, with appalling effects and consequences in Eurasia, North America and further afield. There is nothing funny about that black abyss, so let's all not peer into it as Mr. Putin seems to have done. For Putin is now the Abyss incarnate and is labouring to birth Hell on Earth in our time. He is the enemy of life. The Russian forces entering and attacking Ukraine should be marching under an oil-black banner with blood-red letters which read,"Death to Life!". Anyone who supports him or tries to rationalise what he is now doing in Ukraine is likewise an enemy of life in my opinion.

Very respectfully.

Very perceptive analysis. It does appear that Mr. Putin is "playing it closer to the edge" than most people thought he would do.
