Tribunal rules there's no legal basis for China's claims in South China Sea | Fox News

THE HAGUE, Netherlands – A tribunal ruled in a sweeping decision Tuesday that China has no legal basis for claiming much of the South China Sea and had aggravated the seething regional dispute with its large-scale land reclamation and construction of artificial islands that destroyed coral reefs and the natural condition of the disputed areas.
Ruling on a variety of disputes the Philippines asked the tribunal to settle between it and China, the five-member panel unanimously concluded that China had violated its obligations to refrain from aggravating the dispute while the settlement process was ongoing
So why is this article here? Where are all our GREEN friends here at DP throwing a fit about these islands being built by the Chinese, WHO ARE DESTROYING THE EXISTING REEFS???

Nobody wants to think about the dangers and other implications this is symptomatic of. This is especially true for the President and his onetime SoS who neglected the problem with eyes wide open over his whole term. Of course, Trump and his people are as bad albeit in a different way, proposing shooting ourselves in the foot instead.

No, I want to know why there are no other threads on this. Here is real environmental damage that can be accurately measured, and all our members concern themselves with is the political football of climate change.

Oh- I am sorry. Misunderstanding there. I suspect that the environmental side has just not yet gained traction, with the military implications so much up front and the immediate dangers so looming large and even so with nobody knowing, what to do.

The amount of reef destroyed by these islands is tiny. Not significant.

The potential for conflict that these islands constitute is much more significant. The Chineese have had a history of doing war in an attritional way to see if the other side will back down or not. The western approach is generally to seek the decisive blow. The combination of these methods is very likely to achieve a really big mess.
