In my younger days, I went to many Star Trek conventions. No, I never dressed up.

I'm not hearing this....lalalalala. STOP IT!...Seriously....you do know Star War geeks and Trekie nerds are mortal enemies right? So you would be like a sci-fi oxymoron. Space Federation...pft.

IMO ignorant Star War geeks and Trekkie nerds are mortal enemies. If it wasn't for Star Wars, the Trekkie revival would never have happened. Those of us who went to conventions talked about this and knew it to be true. And if not for the creation of the Star Trek universe, the creation of the Star Wars universe would not have been as easily and widely accepted.

Wow. I can't believe I'm debating this. I'm such a geek.

I think Star Wars would have been accepted just fine if Star Trek hadn't been around. Buster Crabbe Flash Gordon had a bigger role in making Sci-Fi acceptable among American audiences IMO. I do see how you can say that it wouldn't have been so easy to create a Star Wars universe without a Star Trek though. The latter holds the ideas of intergalactic governments and put the social and cultural problems this planet is currently facing into a better perspective for some people. This particular quality can also be seen on Star Wars.

It's the whole universe thing, with other cultures, and a general sense of reality that I'm talking about. Star Trek was really the first mainstream series that created a universe that was understandable in today's standards, since it mirrored reality in a lot of ways. I've read a lot of science fiction that was written before Trek. Much of it was difficult to relate to because it was so foreign. Trek brought sci-fi mainstream and allowed Star Wars to be more easily accepted. Trek also was a great blueprint for Star Wars.

Trek also was a great blueprint for Star Wars.

Hmmm, do you think Lt Uhura's Dance of the seven veils costume paved the way for Princess Leia's little number in those scenes where Jabba has her all chained up?

I do know that C3po has expressed great admiration for Mr Sulu.
