NEW ORLEANS -- A top hurricane forecaster called Al Gore "a gross alarmist" Friday for making an Oscar-winning documentary about global warming.
"He's one of these guys that preaches the end of the world type of things. I think he's doing a great disservice and he doesn't know what he's talking about," Dr. William Gray said in an interview with The Associated Press at the National Hurricane Conference in New Orleans, where he delivered the closing speech."

Hmmmm whatever happen to that consensus?

"Gray, an emeritus professor at the atmospheric science department at Colorado State University, has long railed against the theory that heat-trapping gases generated by human activity are causing the world to warm."

And then....we have his nemesis in this back and forth debate:

"Less than a month before Katrina hit, the journal Nature published an extensive study that Emanuel had conducted in which he surveyed the power of roughly 4,800 hurricanes going back decades. His findings are as damning as they are scary. In that span of time—the period during which climatologists have been warning that greenhouse gases are steadily raising atmospheric and ocean temperatures—the power of the storms doubled. Warm ocean water is like nitroglycerine for hurricanes, and while many researchers had been predicting an explosion of more powerful storms, Emanuel, 51, offered evidence that it was actually happening. "I didn't expect to get people's attention with this paper," he says, "but the timing, so close to Katrina, may have helped wake them up some."

Once again....it comes downto interpretation of Data, and depth of study.

Except we only have reliable data on hurricane winds and power going back TEN YEARS.

So as I said, where is the consenus?

My point was just that....there is NO consensus. Thus my statement:

"Once again....it comes down to interpretation of Data, and depth of study."

Beat upon Al Gore all you want, he's way overboard in my opinion. But dont become his polar opposite in the proccess, it does not help your case for proving he is wrong.

Oh don't worry about that, I stick to the science not the myths being created.

That would be a wonderful change of tactics....I look forward to it....heh

I spoke in the present citing the top Hurricane Forecaster in the country, you are using a former VP without and background in climate or science. Let's see who exactly needs to change tactics???????????????????????

I had no Idea Kerry Emanuel was once the VP....Go Figure. Oh....you mean Al Gore, whom I made clear (though you selectively ignored it) that I consider to be a bit out there. By the way, forcasting meteorology, does not equate to understanding Climate Change....as far as I know. Both our souces are weak examples of those who study the phenomenon.

This must be the FOX daily talking point.

Maybe we should combine Stinger's and NP's threads on this?

Well claiming I'm his polar opposite when in fact I am and have been quoting science regardless of of your insinuating otherwise is a bit out there.

Being a professor of Atmospheric Science isn't exactly "weak" in the are of understanding climate change and the forces that affect changes in climate patterns.

From the University of Colorado:

Education
  • Ph.D. in Geophysical Sciences - 1964 - University of Chicago - Chicago, IL
  • M.S. in Meteorology - 1959 - University of Chicago - Chicago, IL
  • B.S. in Geography - 1952 - George Washington University - Washington, D.C.
Career Overview Professor Gray joined the CSU Department of Atmospheric Science in 1961 after spending four years as a research assistant in the Department of Meteorology at the University of Chicago. He began his career as an Air Force Officer forecasting weather.
Research Interests
  • Tropical cyclones
  • Tropical meteorology
  • Seasonal weather prediction
  • Climate change
Professor Gray's research involves tropical cyclone genesis, structure changes, intensity variations, and motion. He heads the Tropical Meteorology Project which produces a yearly forecast for tropical cyclone activity in the Atlantic basin. He also studies seasonal weather prediction and the physical processes associated with the El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and monsoon variability.

I made no such claim, but instead hinted that it may come to pass, albeit with a sarcastic tone.....My apolgies.

My guys better than your guy...:boom

" Dr. Kerry A. Emanuel is one of the world's leading authorities on hurricanes. He is a professor in the Program in Atmospheres, Oceans, and Climate in the Department of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he received his Ph.D. degree in Meteorology. He became a member of the MIT faculty in 1981 after 3 years at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). He is a fellow of the American Meteorological Society and a member of the National Research Council’s Board on Atmospheric Sciences and Climate. His research focuses on tropical meteorology and climate, with a specialty in hurricane physics. His work in air-sea interaction in tropical cyclones is well regarded among the meteorological community.

Dr. Emanuel has an extensive list of publications that include two books and more than 100 peer-reviewed scientific papers. His new book, Divine Wind: The History and Science of Hurricanes, was named one of the top twenty science books of 2005 by Discover magazine. In this book, he explains how tropical climates give rise to the most powerful storms in the world. TIME magazine named Dr. Emanuel one of the 100 most influential people for 2006 for his latest research, published in a recent issue of the journal Nature, which correlates the greater increasing hurricane intensity with human-induced global warming"

Can we stop this silly game now?

Mine's the top dawg.

So much for the consensus.

I fully agree....there is no consensus. Likely there won't be for some time, as the agenda driven sides are both backed by special interests. It is very difficult to filter the actual science out of the hyperbole created by money. Thatsaid, there does seem to be something happening right now with Earths climate, and in my opinion the blame for it, is less important than understanding the reality, and trying to prevent some of the damage.
Prevention/Preperation need not assign a villian, but does require a Hero of sorts. In my opinion this hero will be the collective understanding of this phenomenon by the human race, and an attempt to ease the road for the future if possible.
It really does not matter who says what, as long as it helps us deal with reality.

I fully agree....there is no consensus.

As proven by the latest IPCC meeting and subsequent report, science by negotiation is not science.

Likely there won't be for some time, as the agenda driven sides are both backed by special interests.

I find the GW desicples certainly driven by thier ideology but the debunkers merely looking for scientific proof of the claims, prood which doesn't exist to any certainty.
Thatsaid, there does seem to be something happening right now with Earths climate,

Ever since there was a climate there has been something happening with it and as long as there is a climate there will be something happening with it.

and in my opinion the blame for it, is less important than understanding the reality, and trying to prevent some of the damage.

And that requires a belief that we can.

Prevention/Preperation need not assign a villian, but does require a Hero of sorts.

But it an be used by "villains" to attack things they oppose.

In my opinion this hero will be the collective understanding of this phenomenon by the human race, and an attempt to ease the road for the future if possible.
It really does not matter who says what, as long as it helps us deal with reality.

I'm all for understanding but until we can do better the GW desciples should not try and force policies we don't even know are required and which in fact could produce result we don't want.

Hurricane Forecaster Blasts Al Gore Over Global Warming

“You’ve heard a lot of foolishness over the last couple years,” said Dr Gray. “I think the whole human-induced greenhouse gas thing is a red herring … I see climate change as due to the ocean circulation pattern.” He believes the earth has been in a natural warming cycle for 30 years owing to fluctuations in ocean currents and that temperatures will cool down in another five to ten years as the currents shift again.

He singled out Mr Gore as a “gross alarmist” and said: “He’s one of these guys that preaches the end of the world type of things. I think he’s doing a great disservice and he doesn’t know what he’s talking about.”

Re: Hurricane Forecaster Blasts Al Gore Over Global Warming

This news was breaking about a week ago....thats when the first thread went up. Stinger made a new one, which was merged with the other, and soon this one will be as well I'm sure. I disagree with Al Gore alot too....can you make a thread about ME?

Perhaps in the basement....I could use the publicity.

Re: Hurricane Forecaster Blasts Al Gore Over Global Warming

I live in a deep red part of an otherwise blue state. my representative in the house is Vern Ehlers, a Republican. I saw him speak last week for the first time. he talked about his job, and he talked about various issues. before working in government, Vern was a physicist. I disagreed with much that he had to say, of course. but when he talked about global warming, all he said was this:

"look, I'm a scientist. if you think co2 emissions have nothing to do with global warming, you're crazy."
