WASHINGTON — Three newly empowered Democratic House committee chairmen, alarmed by statements over the weekend by President Trump about his former lawyer’s planned testimony before Congress, cautioned on Sunday that any effort to discourage or influence a witness’s testimony could be construed as a crime.

The warning, a stark and unusual message from some of Congress’s most influential Democrats, underscores the increasing legal and political peril facing Mr. Trump. Democrats are beginning their own investigations of him as the special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, appears to move toward a conclusion in his investigation into the Trump campaign’s ties to Russia and potential obstruction of justice by Mr. Trump.
======================================================
Trump's threatening Cohen's father-in-law ahead of Cohen's testimony has been seen as witness tampering, a Federal crime:

18 U.S. Code § 1512 - Tampering with a witness, victim, or an informant
US Code
((A) prevent the attendance or testimony of any person in an official proceeding;
(B) prevent the production of a record, document, or other object, in an official proceeding; or
(C) prevent the communication by any person to a law enforcement officer or judge of the United States of information relating to the commission or possible commission of a Federal offense or a violation of conditions of probation, parole, or release pending judicial proceedings;
shall be punished as provided in paragraph

(3) The punishment for an offense under this subsection is—

(b) Whoever knowingly uses intimidation, threatens, or corruptly persuades another person, or attempts to do so, or engages in misleading conduct toward another person, with intent to—
(1) influence, delay, or prevent the testimony of any person in an official proceeding;
(2) cause or induce any person to—
(A) withhold testimony, or withhold a record, document, or other object, from an official proceeding;

(B) alter, destroy, mutilate, or conceal an object with intent to impair the object’s integrity or availability for use in an official proceeding;
(C) evade legal process summoning that person to appear as a witness, or to produce a record, document, or other object, in an official proceeding; or
(D) be absent from an official proceeding to which such person has been summoned by legal process; or
(3) hinder, delay, or prevent the communication to a law enforcement officer or judge of the United States of information relating to the commission or possible commission of a Federal offense or a violation of conditions of probation
 [1] supervised release,,[1] parole, or release pending judicial proceedings;
shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than 20 years, or both.
(c) Whoever corruptly—
(2) otherwise obstructs, influences, or impedes any official proceeding, or attempts to do so,
shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than 20 years, or both.

(d) Whoever intentionally harasses another person and thereby hinders, delays, prevents, or dissuades any person from—
(1) attending or testifying in an official proceeding;

(e) In a prosecution for an offense under this section, it is an affirmative defense, as to which the defendant has the burden of proof by a preponderance of the evidence, that the conduct consisted solely of lawful conduct and that the defendant’s sole intention was to encourage, induce, or cause the other person to testify truthfully.
(f) For the purposes of this section—
(1) an official proceeding need not be pending or about to be instituted at the time of the offense; and
(2) the testimony, or the record, document, or other object need not be admissible in evidence or free of a claim of privilege.
(g) In a prosecution for an offense under this section, no state of mind need be proved with respect to the circumstance—

(1) that the official proceeding before a judge, court, magistrate judge, grand jury, or government agency is before a judge or court of the United States, a United States magistrate judge, a bankruptcy judge, a Federal grand jury, or a Federal Government agency; or
(2) that the judge is a judge of the United States or that the law enforcement officer is an officer or employee of the Federal Government or a person authorized to act for or on behalf of the Federal Government or serving the Federal Government as an adviser or consultant.
(j) If the offense under this section occurs in connection with a trial of a criminal case, the maximum term of imprisonment which may be imposed for the offense shall be the higher of that otherwise provided by law or the maximum term that could have been imposed for any offense charged in such case.

NYT again...

If I bothered to try to get past the paywall, I'm sure I'd find some nonsense in that article that anyone but a useful idiot would summarily dismiss.

I'll just say that Trump has already told the House Dems that he has something for them if they insist on getting all stupid on him.

Michael Cohen Is Trump’s ‘Greatest Threat,’ Defense Lawyer Lanny Davis Warns

The defense lawyer said Trump’s “demonizing” of Cohen’s family shows the president is scared.
===========================================
Trump's interview with Jeanine Pirro on Fox slammed Cohen's father-in-law, apparently trying to intimidate Cohen before his Congressional testimony. This amounts of witness tampering by Trump. See definition of law in prior post in this thread.

Trump definitely sounded desperate. I think he is seeing the walls closing in on him.

Witness tampering? From this?

“He’s in trouble on some loans and fraud and taxi cabs and stuff that I know nothing about, and in order to get a sentence reduced, he says, ’I have an idea. I’ll give you some information on the president,’” Trump said of Cohen. “Well, there is no information. But he should give information maybe on his father-in-law because that’s the one that people want to look at because where does that money ― that’s the money in the family.”

LOL!!

Nonsense.

LOL Yes I have heard that hollow threat. Not one Democrat is worried about it. He makes stuff up for his base while the rest of us roll our eyes in disbelief.

have you read the "About Us" tab?
The Conservative Tree House may be called a Last Refuge for each of us for different reasons. Whatever trail through the woods brought us here, we have shared the turmoil of storms as we have been finding our voices as individuals in this growing community. Perhaps you’ve had some truly shockingly cruel things said to you purely because you believe in limited government and fiscal conservatism

It's a siren call to all the nutters and conspiracy theorists. Do you routinely say stupid ****? Do you believe nonsense based on nothing, when it aligns with your goals, and do you reject evidence/reality on a whim? Most people may shun you for that...but WE WELCOME YOU! It's like the basement here, only in a treehouse.

Who is Michael Cohen's father-in-law? Trump says he should be investigated

President Trump invoked a different figure Saturday when talking about the ongoing Russia investigation: his former attorney Michael Cohen's father-in-law.

In order for Cohen to get his sentence reduced, he thought, "I have an idea, I'll give you some information on the president. Well, there is no information," Trump said during his 20-plus-minute phone interview, in which he often rambled on, with Fox News' Jeanine Pirro on Saturday night. "He should give information maybe on his father-in-law, because that's the one that people want to look at."

Michael Cohen is Trump's 'greatest threat,' his lawyer Lanny Davis warns

President Donald Trump is continuing to bash Michael Cohen, but defense attorney Lanny Davis said that’s because the former fixer is “the greatest threat” to his old boss.

“Donald Trump sees Michael Cohen, and I would say justifiably, as the greatest threat to his presidency and what could be criminal and impeachable actions as president,” Davis, who represents Cohen, told MSNBC’s Kasie Hunt on Sunday.
================================================
The fallout from Cohen's testimony is going to be interesting to watch.

Democrats threatening Trump with charging him with a crime? Unbelievable!!!

As far as the Democrats go the very fact that Trump still sucks air is enough to charge him with something. It's pathetic and, frankly, rather telling of where they'll go if they manage to get both houses and the WH in 2020.

I'd worry more about what's really behind Trump being so cozy with Putin as well as giving the Russians highly confidential intel docs the day after he fired Comey. He even disclosed sources & methods, which is strictly verboten in the spy business. He showed himself to be both a spy & a traitor in front of Russian media. No U.S. or other European media invited. Putin must have been beside himself, laughing his donkey off. (осел in Russian).

I often wonder if people who post this nonsense about Trump being a traitor actually believe what they write. It is clear they hate Trump,much as I disliked Bush I&II and Obama.That dislike did not translate into my posting them working for foreign nations at a cost to america.

The FBI then Mueller have been looking into Trump and Russia for about 2 1/2 years. If there was some proof that we have a traitor as CIC I am sure that there would be a rush to insure we fixed that problem.

Rather we are talking of Cohen making payments on Trump's behalf to some whores (my opinion). Pretty far from treason with Russia.

So what would you call a person who handed over top secret intel info to an adversary spy? Was he just being gracious, a nice guy entertaining a few Russians to celebrate his firing of Comey the day before?

Regardless of what I believe, a call this as I see it. Little interpretation involved. Smiles all around for the Russian-only press, just shake hands with that Russian ambassador/spy master Kisliak.

I do think that Trump is stupid enough to have not realized what he did was crazy. That being said even he is not stupid enough to have done spywork (if that is a word) in the open.

I may be wrong and though I sometimes defend Trump there are plenty of things I dislike about is words and actions. Just think that the idea of him conspiring with Russia makes no sense to me.

Here's my question:

WHY ARE THEY WARNING HIM??

Do they think he will even listen to them, and even if he did, why are they warning him? Do they want to HELP HIM? Help him WHAT?
Don't warn Trump of a damn thing. Take the warning labels off and let Nature and Justice take their course!
