To Beat ISIS, We Must Think Smaller

People become radicalized when they lack hope, jobs, and purpose. Local investments can break the cycle....

Not this **** again...

Dealing with Islamic Extremism is not as simple as highway construction and jobs, that is extremely foolish to keep pimping as fact.

Yes, poverty is a major driving force behind terrorism. It certainly isn't the only one since some terrorists haven't been poor. But we haven't even been able to eradicate poverty in our own country. I'm not sure we could do it enough in other countries to make a significant dent.

Since the odds of an American being killed by a terrorist are so low, I would rather see American resources used to first help poor Americans. Once we have done that I am all for helping others.

The idea that massive aid programs will end radicalization and violence also ignores the reality of corruption - how many of these foreign "governments" (national or local) would accept being left out of the aid distribution "business"? We now give billions to many of these impoverished nations/communities only to see it not reach those that we initially desired to help. If those that become "radicalized" have fled that region then it is too late to deal with that "root cause". It is indeed easy to "break the cycle" - all we have to do is eliminate world poverty and educate everyone in the world without letting the local corrupt government officials take their customary cut. ;)

the strategy that i support : get out of the Middle East, and replace oil as our primary transportation fuel. the region can't be fixed by western military force.

What is interesting is that many of the European terrorists of Muslim provenance were from good bachground, well educated with good prospects for the future, much as were the German Raf terrorists in the1970s.

To beat ISIS, we would have to bring the Russians back for maybe a year....;)

Otherwise, we just offer lip service and go through the motions for the MSM

Apology is the name of the game. It ignores the root cause. Just like many problems we try to fix by transfering blame and yelling bigot.

Then why do radicals come from literally every country on the planet?

Heck, how do you explain the radicals in the US? How about trying to apply what you say to a great many US Radical Terrorists?

Does anybody here really think that hope would put a stop to the KKK?

Would a jobs program have prevented the SLA and Weather Underground from their reign of terror?

Maybe all that ALF and ELF need is purpose and local investments. Then they will stop burning down car dealerships and housing subdivisions.

Look, what you are saying sounds very nice and fluffy, but it does not a damned thing to address the actual root of radicalism. And that there is another person or group that is actively trying to radicalize individuals. Just look at the recent incident in San Bernadino. Both were educated, and he had a very comfortable Government job, making good money. So nobody can really claim that they lacked "hope and jobs".

But they had a purpose, to kill as many people as they could in support of their beliefs.

In fact, given how much we tried to do this exact type of junk while we were over there in heavy numbers in the Middle East, Isis shouldn't even exist. the US military gave a lot of foreign-locals job security for quite some time. Didn't stop them.

Isis is fill with a bunch of depraved sick ****s - not people simply needing an honest day's work to support their families.

Now... if people would take just five seconds to improve inner cities in our ****ing country with that mindset, I'd be all for it. That wouldn't be a wasted effort, in my view.
