Three Mile Island nuclear reactor shuts down unexpectedly.
By NBC News and wire servicees
A reactor at Three Mile Island, the site of the nation’s worst nuclear accident, shut down unexpectedly on Thursday afternoon when a coolant pump tripped and steam was released, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission told NBC News.
The system tripped when "the pump stopped operating and created a power/flow imbalance," said NRC spokesman Neil Sheehan.
The plant responded as designed and is stable with no impact on public health or safety, added NRC spokeswoman Diane Screnci.
If any radiation was in the released steam, Screnci said, it would be below detectable levels.
...so what are we debating here?....The plant responded as designed and is stable with no impact on public health or safety...
Who said we were debating anything?...so what are we debating here?

This interested me because I'm currently working in Harrisburg, and will be tomorrow.

Of course this recent minor event (and all the other minor events) are used by the news media to remind people of the big event which took place before I was even born. It's how news works.Nothing happened in the "worst nuclear accident' in the first place. It worked as designed even with stupid operators shuttting off cooling water.
(water boiled off and reaction was killed, yes the latent heat destroyed reactor core...) Investors lost, public was never in any danger...
This is just an excuse to remind people of the massive hype of 3MI.
PS
I used to believe the accident stories too, then I read al l the details of the "accident" in several books......all over blown BS.
Uh the name of this website?Who said we were debating anything?

Sooo....what are we debating? It's called Debate Politics, but funny enough, it talks about sports, entertainment and cooking to name a few other things. It even has a place where you can have a beer. So what is your beef again?
Is the THree Mile Island nuclear reactor a Mark I type reactor like the Fukushima reactors that failed and went into full meltdown?
Yes, and it will fail and go into full meltdown as easily as the Fukushima one did. Y'know, after a huge earthquake and giant tsunami.
Sooo....what are we debating?
Are we supposed to discuss how evil nuke plants are and start singing the praises of solar, or...what? Is this story a spring-board for "alternative" energy?quit being a ****ing instigator.
jesus christ!
Appalling as it may be to you, I didn't have any specific debate topic in mind when I posted it.Are we supposed to discuss how evil nuke plants are and start singing the praises of solar, or...what? Is this story a spring-board for "alternative" energy?
I beleieve they're overdue.Yes, and it will fail and go into full meltdown as easily as the Fukushima one did. Y'know, after a huge earthquake and giant tsunami.
Yeah right, you posted this story on a hostile debate forum, and now you're trying to hide your motive like we've never seen anyone do that before. So let's go Mr. Pro-Warmer, let's hear it.Appalling as it may be to you, I didn't have any specific debate topic in mind when I posted it.

So far as I know, most of the current nuclear plants are 20-30 years old.You might have a slightly different view if you were in the immediate area. I've lived most of my life within about 30 miles of TMI. There are numerous families here with a veritable plague of cancers that seem to have originated after the incident. After seeing the progression of lies that were told about the extent of the Fukushima disaster until it was literally impossible to conceal the truth, I have less than zero faith in official accounts or reassurances. One of the worst aspects of TMI and its nearby neighbor Peach Bottom is that a catastrophic failure would travel straight down the Susquehanna and devastate the Chesapeake Bay.I think the consensus is that nuclear power in its current state just isn't worth the risk.

Even with updates, they can't be as good as a new plant in terms of safety and the like, I would think.
But then, there's the whole issue of the waste disposal...
