Thousands of Syrians Flee to Iraq; Crisis Feared.....

Tens of thousands of Syrian Kurds swarmed across a bridge into neighboring Iraq's northern self-ruled Kurdish region over the past few days in one of the biggest waves of refugees since the rebellion against President Bashar Assad began, U.N. officials said Monday.

The sudden exodus of around 30,000 Syrians amid the summer heat has created desperate conditions and left aid agencies and the regional government struggling to accommodate them, illustrating the huge strain the 2½-year-old Syrian conflict has put on neighboring countries.

The mostly Kurdish men, women and children who made the trek join some 1.9 million Syrians who already have found refuge abroad from Syria's relentless carnage.

"This is an unprecedented influx of refugees, and the main concern is that so many of them are stuck out in the open at the border or in emergency reception areas with limited, if any, access to basic services," said Alan Paul, emergency team leader for the Britain-based charity Save the Children.

The U.N. said the reason for this flow, which began five days ago and continued unabated Monday, is unclear. But Kurdish areas in northeastern Syria have been engulfed by fighting in recent months between Kurdish militias and Islamic extremist rebel factions with links to al-Qaida. Dozens have been killed.

Following the assassination of a prominent Kurdish leader late last month, a powerful Kurdish militia said it was mobilizing to expel Islamic extremists.

On Monday, activists said fighters from al-Qaida-linked jihadi groups shelled areas in the predominantly Kurdish town of Ras al-Ayn with mortars and artillery, coinciding with clashes in the area between Kurdish gunmen and jihadi fighters.....snip~

It appears the Syrian Rebels have decided to take out some frustrations on the Kurds. As the Syrian Kurds decided they would stand up to the Rebels and their AQ like types. Also taking a stance against the FSA, and their branch of Rebels. Imagine that. So now the Kurds and the Christians, have decided to stand with Assad.

Not to much on those Rebels backed by us.....just out and about killing whomever stands up to them, huh?

Well.....at least there they didn't have to worry about crossing A Skyway Bridge with 5 dollar toll booths. :lol:

Yeah I guess they will have to always deal with that Sectarian divide.....well as long as everybody keeps letting both sides, that's their Clerics, to keep mouthing off.

The KRG is actually extremely pleasant and getting into their territory would be infinitely better than being in Syria as the authorities have gone out of their way to integrate their fellow Kurds into the community and have issued most of them temporary employment cards.

In fact the decision to open the border which had been tightly controlled because of the relations between the KDP and PYD is a sign that Barzani is going to take a more aggressive and keen interest in Syrian Kurdish affairs and may be a precursor to more action and flow of support across the Zakho crossing.

Sectarian rule will never lead to peace. Anywhere. Especially here. In a 7th century society like the middle east, it just leads to death and destruction. Here is it just leads to politicians wanting to regulate the bedroom, sex and the sometime result of that.

Anyone that says we should ignore the problems in the ME and stay out completely have absolutely no clue how our economy works or how it's tied to the world economy (and oil is just one of MANY reasons).

Although I don't agree with much of what he says, the US' Vice President Biden made a statement that he was roundly chastised for, yet he was exactly correct.

He stated way back when the Gulf War began, that the only way peace would or could come to that region was to redivide the countries into the pre-British tribal areas. In Iraq, that would be three main regions; Kurd, Sunni and Shi'a.

In the ME as a whole, it would be more like Kurds, Sunnis, Shiites, Christians, Jews, Druze, Baha'i, Hindu, Mandean and Sufi. All of which tend to be either killed by the others or try to kill the others.

Just send them to their own corners, and keep them apart. This of course will not stop the violence completely, but it would make it more difficult to attack your enemy and more easy to protect your own.

That may be true.....depends on if they know about fractured globalization or not. As well as having the Right type of people in place when playing where the Big Boys play. Sun Tzu.....know they Enemy well.
