Thousands of Canadians have rallied behind two petitions calling for a nationwide ban of conversion therapy. It's part of a wider global trend condemning the practice.

Peter Gajdics came out as gay to his family when he was 23. His staunchly Catholic parents rejected his homosexuality, and he left home.

'Pray away the Gay' has been debunked in most parts of the world. It does not achieve its objective of restoring a person to heterosexuality but instead drives them to see psychiatrists, have nervous breakdowns & often commit suicide. A lot of strictly religious people are all for it, unfortunately, and put their loved ones through Medieval exorcisms & worse, like electroshock therapy, with no expected results recorded.

Conversion therapy is a sham at best and mental and sometimes actual physical torture at worst.

It’s a sick, twisted and demented practice that must be chased into the dustbin of history.

At 23 he should leave home...

Well if he lives in the GTA or near Vancouver that is is a lot easier said than done.

There are trees... all he needs is an axe, right?

Any decent human being would never force anyone else to take conversion classes.

And, of course, no parent worth the name "parent" would ever disown a gay child.

BUT I think that some conversion therapy classes should be allowed for gay people who want to at least listen to the advice that is offered.

There are some loving parents who would never kick their gay children out of the home and who accept their children's gay friends, but these parents are genuinely concerned about their children's happiness.

Contrary to what we see on "Will and Grace," life for most gays is not one fun adventure.

If a gay is really thinking about a life in which s/he abstains from sex, or if a gay is actually bi-sexual and wants to concentrate on heterosexuality, then s/he should have the option of attending conversion classes.

The word "conversion" is the culprit. No one is ever going to convert from gay to straight (or vice-versa -- although prison life proves that some straight men are not adverse to gay sex).

What we are talking about then is counseling. It could be religious or non-religious counseling. But it should be non-judgmental and devoid of condemnation of any kind.

Gayness & bisexuality are inborn genetic traits, not the result of demonic possession. Not having access to receptive girls while in jr hi, I got my outlet by being on the gay side. Throughout hs & college & on into professional life, the thought of doing that never occurred to me. But now that I'm a senior citizen & lack access to female sex once again, I enjoy interacting with like-minded married str8 guys in a gay manner. My thinking is that married str8 guys are less likely to be harboring STDs & are looking for service because they are not getting satisfied at home. A man in that situation does not think of himself as gay. He has a gay guy satisfying his needs, so he has little if any conflict.

Thank you for your frank comments.

The idea that being gay is the work of the Devil is not only ridiculous but cruel.

We often (rightly) lament the suffering of other marginalized groups.

But even some of those other marginalized groups condemn and persecute (verbally or physically) gays.

I wish you the greatest happiness in your golden years. (P.S. As a fellow senior citizen, I know there ain't anything golden about being old!)

Best wishes

"Are there no prisons?" said the Spirit, turning on him for the last time with his own words. "Are there no workhouses?"

How can a heterosexuality that never existed be “restored”?

Maybe the same way some of these jackasses can have their cognitive ability returned to them.

I got no issues with this. Trying to change a person's sexuality is...silly at best.
Someone on page 1 suggested a limited number of clinics be made available for those who really want to try such a feat...and I'd be OK with that too.
