Police: North Portland demonstrators smashed windows, committed arson
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – Portland Police Bureau says a group of demonstrators committed arson in a dumpster at the bureau’s North Precinct and damaged several businesses Saturday night.

According to police, the group gathered in Peninsula Park at around 8 p.m. Saturday. About an hour later, the group began walking through the neighborhood.

Police said some people in the group vandalized the Starbucks coffee shop on Northeast Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, near Northeast Ainsworth Street. They broke windows and launched explosive devices at the building, police said.

They said two banks on Northeast Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, near Northeast Jarrett Street, were also vandalized. One was defaced with graffiti and another had its windows broken.

The demonstrators also damaged bus shelters and several street signs, police said.

This is rioting and vandalism, nothing more than criminal activity.

Whatever reason they assembled should be ignored and not discussed because of their actions.

We will not be held hostage by terrorists. People no longer present an argument, they go straight to violence.

You claim they go to violence....who had violence committed against them? It doesn't say in your article, it describes vandalized street signs and businesses, but doesn't describe any attacks on people (violence). It sounds like it's overblown and misleading of you to post that?
Compare that to January 6th where police were attacked by right wing Trump supporters, I think the latter was much worse. Some even died or committed suicide after the attacks. Maybe you've heard o fit?

Protests that destroy public property has long been a tradition of protesting things, especially things like the unlawful killing of citizens.
There was a movie on this back in the 80s, "Do the Right Thing", maybe you've heard of that too. It's not lawful but it happens. Big news to act faux outraged only when it's on not right wingers? Seems so.

I have no problem if a DA wants to charge the bloke or blokes who lit up the dumpster, or broke the windows. I am no fan of rioters or vandals. But those who did neither, are called protesters not rioters or vandals.

Unless, of course, they did so on 1/6/2021 at the US Capitol.

Look at you making excuses for violence.

See you in November.

Well, regardless of what we--or the media--call(s) it, it's flat-out wrong. You get people's attention by the number of protestors you have, or how well you can explain your position to the public. Committing violence (yes, I think most people would use that word) doesn't help your cause, at all.

Even the "Burn, Baby, Burn" actions in the 1960's didn't help the cause--it make their point even more difficult to get across.

So you can't back up your claim of violence?

So surprising. A thread from Schism where he can't back anything up, and posts childish responses.

Enjoy failing at the very basics of debate.

1/6 was a little more than just vandalism. This is not to say vandalism is OK, of course. But vandalism should be prosecuted as vandalism, and insurrection as insurrection. The point of 1/6 was not just to express anger or protest, it was to "stop the steal" and hijack legitimate functions of government, IOW, insurrection.

Your article clearly says they are demonstrators not vandals. You are spreading misinformation if you call them anything but what the media tells you to call them.

Actually my standard is exactly the same. We have protesters, rioters, and insurrectionists involved on Jan 6. If prosecutors think a case is worth filing against someone, and they can prove the elements of a crime, then that is what they should do.

All those idiots should be charged with any crimes they committed.

Further they should be treated in accordance with what is common for trespassing, destruction of property, and assault.

Not this blown up nonsense that "democracy was threatened" hysteria.

It did delay congressional action for a bit over 4 hours - thus it was called an insurrection.

I don't know what else to say....

Exclusive: FBI finds scant evidence U.S. Capitol attack was coordinated - sources
WASHINGTON, Aug 20 (Reuters) - The FBI has found scant evidence that the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol was the result of an organized plot to overturn the presidential election result, according to four current and former law enforcement officials.

Though federal officials have arrested more than 570 alleged participants, the FBI at this point believes the violence was not centrally coordinated by far-right groups or prominent supporters of then-President Donald Trump, according to the sources, who have been either directly involved in or briefed regularly on the wide-ranging investigations.

"Ninety to ninety-five percent of these are one-off cases," said a former senior law enforcement official with knowledge of the investigation. "Then you have five percent, maybe, of these militia groups that were more closely organized. But there was no grand scheme with Roger Stone and Alex Jones and all of these people to storm the Capitol and take hostages."

People need to start protesting rag shit journalist and papers that use headlines like "protestors" instead of obvious criminals out vandalizing.

You're still trying to downplay the attack on the Capitol. Your intellectual integrity is less than zero.

Violence is just about attacks on people? I am not sure what kind of definition of violence that you are using but the rest of us use this one.

Definition of violence

1a: the use of physical force so as to injure, abuse, damage, or destroy

Oh well. Too bad for Portland.
They are use to it by now.
When the businesses and tax money leave the city what will the people that are left to do?

Obviously you don't know the definition of violence.
Violence is the unlawful exercise of physical force or intimidation by the exhibition of such force.
