You’re preaching to the choir when it comes to frustration over how many appeals convicted criminals get, and the length of time it often takes to reach the final judgment.

From my perspective, individual states laws are largely responsible for huge backlogs of cases, and extensive appeals processes that lead to that convicted murderer spending 35 years on death row.

A good start would begin with streamlining the appeals processes and reevaluating certain non-violent crimes that don’t justify incarceration, or at least not lengthy incarceration.

So that's your idea of protected? My idea of Law and Order is that these folks would have been sent packing months ago. I DO support the peaceful protests, but not the crap I see in the videos--not destruction and violence. Recently, in Rochester, New York, there were protests over a black man out of his head on PCP who died when the several cops who subdued him put a spit hood on him. He suffocated. (This was another case of police being called to a "mental health emergency"--by his brother, no less-- that went really wrong. I don't blame the cops; they were not trained or equipped to handle the situation.) Thousands of protesters came together and prayed, etc. Then they began marching and when they encountered a wall of cops who deemed them an unlawful assembly (for what reason?) things got ugly and they trashed the outdoor dining spaces at five restaurants nearby. Some plastic chairs got tossed and glassware broken, diners chased off. I'm sure it was scary for them.

There have now been marches for five days. No looting. No burning. It no doubt gums up traffic and keeps people out of the area for safety's sake, though. The mayor is promising to overhaul the system that responds to situations such as crazed men with a head full of Angel Dust. The brother apparently either didn't know his brother was high, or he didn't tell that to the cops, but the guy was obviously not right when they overtook him--he had been shedding his clothes as he walked down the street and was nearly naked when they stopped him. I never heard of a spit hood before; is that to protect cops from HIV? Or maybe they were hoping it would quiet him down, like a parrot.

Should the man have been using illegal drugs? No. Should the police have to deal with that kind of emergency? No. Should the protesters have been told they couldn't march that first night, for whatever reason? Probably not. It just escalated the situation.

These kind of protests are protected by the First Amendment and the massive numbers of protesters is getting the mayor's attention. Finally. So while I'm sure it is a major pain in the ass for the people living in Central Rochester right now, it is working as our Founding Fathers envisioned it. That is why I still support the PEACEFUL protests. Blacks may not have been on their minds when they thought about the right to bring their grievances to the attention of their government in lawful assembly, but Blacks are now full citizens and have that right. And they have a point.
