Rural America is suffering an economic crisis as crop prices plunge — ‘U.S. soybean farmers cannot survive a prolonged trade dispute’​

• Agricultural trade groups have sounded the alarm recently on the state of farmers, who are grappling with a continued slump in prices for their crops and worsening credit conditions. They have asked lawmakers to help increase access to export markets, including China, which is still locked in a trade war with the U.S.

U.S. producers of corn and soybeans have sent dire warnings as prices for their crops have crashed in recent years while President Donald Trump’s trade war whipsaws farmers.

On Thursday, the National Corn Growers Association raised alarms about “the economic crisis hitting rural America, as commodity prices drop at a time when input costs remain at near-record highs.”

If he's convinced they will still vote GOP, he'll bail them out.

The agricultural sector of our economy is damn near at the top of the list as the most planned and government influenced function, subsidized to the tune of near $10 billion per year and regulated to the hills and back not just in production and equipment use but global trade. Profit margins fluctuate wildly depending on size and type, but are influenced wildly based on operating expense to weather conditions to US placement of products onto the domestic and world stage.

... all of which Trump is messing about with.

It is not rocket science to realize that starting a multiple-way temper tantrum and TACO based trade dispute with just about every trading partner on the planet was going to harm someone. The wealthy are going to be okay, everyone else will have some economic impact. The agricultural industry is no different, the losers in that sectors are the rural America small to medium scale farmers. What is left of them, and Trump seems determined to ensure they have a painful exit from their own businesses. Bankruptcies were already on the rise for farmers, anyone expecting that trend to suddenly get better?

I think there will be significant impact on the US long after the tariffs and Trump are gone. As we see this weekend China, Russia and India are strengthening their alliances and looking to broaden their influence in the wake of growing US isolationism. Additionally, western countries are doing the same recognizing that US can no longer be considered a dependable trading or defense partner. I see this as a growing trend and not one that will be reversed to the detriment of the US.

Not only are prices dropping input costs are rising

Fertilizer costs are going up ( potash is imported, energy costs to make nitrogen fertilizer will increase with more sales to Europe


Pesticide costs are going to increase. China and India are sources of cheap quality pesticides, many of the major crop protection companies buy actives from China and or India. Bayer increases the price of roundup based on the price of it coming from China. During Covid Bayer increased profits drastically as the supply out of China dropped

Farmers are going to get it coming and going. Of course blackrock will be able to buy up the farms at fire sale prices, and will give Trump a big donation to reward him

Nobody knows more about corn and soybeans than Donald Trump, believe me.
