George Clooney Will Speak To UN Security Council Thursday

It's been said that Hollywood's hottest marriage is the one between actors and Africa. That'll be true Thursday when Oscar winner George Clooney is scheduled to address the United Nations Security Council on the crisis in Darfur. That's right, not some small media conference, but the actual Security Council. Hosted by John Bolton, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, the briefing is organized by The Elie Wiesel Foundation for Humanity (EWF), which recently established a Darfur Commission of Nobel Laureates.

Clooney visited Darfuri refugees last April to use his celebrity clout to raise awareness of the plight of refugees in the war-torn region, considered the 3rd biggest humanitarian crisis in the history of the UN. According to the Oscar-winning actor, the US, the UN and the world's policies on Sudan is failing. "If we turn our heads and look away and hope that it will disappear then they will-all of them, an entire generation of people. And we will only have history left to judge us," Clooney has said about the tragedy.

We have some of THE most intelligent men and women on the face of the planet, supposedly, in the U.N. They collectively have high degrees and vast experiences not only in their selective fields but in International politics and law that would boggle the minds of the ordinary human beings (supposedly). They have committees responsible for researching, visiting, and assessing world problems.....

...yet a freaking American ACTOR gets to/is allowed to/HAS to go before the U.N. to explain to these 'geniouses' the status and plight of Darfur!? :doh

We might as well send Larry, the Cable Guy (the country comedian) to the U.N. to say "Darfur is all F*ed up, ya'll! Its needs fixin' - Git 'er done! That's all I have to say. Thank you!"

Umm, is the basis of your post that his arguement should be written off because he himself is an actor? (ad-hominem)

I trust him before most politicians. He has the freedom to be honest.

Are you familiar with the agression in Darfur? Or his extent of the knowledge of it?

1. I think it is utterly ridiculous that the U.N. invites in ANYONE from the outside, especially entertainers from the United states, to lecture THEM on Darfur! The diplomats from the U.N. are responsible for doing the research, for getting to the bottom of what is going on, and for taking action! In fact, they already KNOW what is going on in Darfur! The problem isn't that they are oblivious to what is going on or has been going on in darfur, it is that these geniuses have refused to do anything about it! They are all about 'Bill Clinton Diplomacy', meaning in the face of blatant aggression, crimes, genocide, etc they choose to simply ignore what is going on and refuse to take action! They don't need an entertainer come tell them what is going on! They are the U.N., for God's sakes! When the U.N. has to sink to bringing in actors to give them Intel reports, they are beyond help or of any use. Clooney will tell them nothing they don't already know, and he will try to play upon their sense of right, fairness, and on their consciences.....which will not work. Hate to tell you, but the U.N. is the group that kept a dictator who raped, tortured, and murdered his own people in power while they picked the pockets of the dead and dying of their money. the U.N. is the group that sat back and watched the murder of Lebonese Ambassadors, the enslavement of Lebanon, the build-up of Hezbollah, and the use of lebanon as a launching pad for terrorists against Israel yet was unable to call Hezbollah a terrorist group! The U.N. is the group who has known for a long time about the genocide going on by MUSLIM terrrorists against Christians and others, while the French sold weapons to the aggressors, yet did nothing. Clooney's words will do NOTHING!

2. yes, I am extremely aware of what has been going on in Darfur, as I work for the HQ 'in charge' of that area.
