"They Thought They Were Free"

In 1966, Milton Mayer wrote They Thought They Were Free: The Germans, 1933-45 about the suppression of freedom and the rise of tyranny in the Third Reich. An excerpt appears here. I'll quote from it below:



German history shows us why we must fight even slight infringements of liberty and tiny violations of rights with all our might. We musn’t sooth ourselves with the thought, “It probably won’t lead to anything.” If that’s what we always tell ourselves, it will inevitably lead to something someday.

Remember the adage, "Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty." If we forget that, then we will consign ourselves to despotism.
