In chess. Viswanathan Anand, a player from India, has been named as the number one chess player in the world. To an avid chess player such as myself, who has played in tournaments in the past (poorly, I might add ), this is earthshaking news.

In the Fischer-Spasky days, it was the Sicilian defense, with stunning moves which could turn a game around in only one move. Then for many years, the Russians dominated with the French and Caro-Kann (the French defense is still my favorite when I have the black pieces), which were painstakingly positional games. Now the Sicilian is back in vogue with new lines, making it the best defense for black, although the Queen's Indian defense has also made a big comeback. With the white pieces, the Ruy Lopez is the game of choice, as it avoids the pitfalls of the Sicilian and Queen's Indian, but in that case, black can still counter with the French or Caro-Kann.

I have gone over many of the games Anand has played, and this guy is a genius. When analysts see a losing or draw position, and computers see the same thing, Anand is able to to use his intuition to create a new line and win a game where there was no win. This is something that very few players, even masters and a few grandmasters are unable to do.

What makes this newsworthy is that the USA has not dominated chess for quite a while, and now the Russians, for whom chess is the national pastime, are beginning to go down to defeat. We now see the rise of India, the nation where chess originated thousands of years ago through a board game called chatturanga. Back to the beginning.

....

Thanks for the interesting insight to a world I known nothing about.

Immature Mode

Why play chess when we have computers to simulate RTS games?

Supreme Commander > Chess

Because humans have something that computers will never have - intuition. It is this quality that Anand has used to win games in the exact same situations that computers would offer a draw in, or even lose. Yes, computers are powerful tools, but they, at this time, cannot replace the human mind. As to why play chess? Because it is stimulating and because it is fun - 2 more concepts that computers will never know.

You can play computer games against other people, just as you can play chess against other people.

Yeah that, and the fact that computers can create simulations with more variables for strategy that challenge the human mind. You're comparing the capacity of a computer to inanimate marble chess pieces.

Apples to apples Dana. The computer is the tool, like the chess board, only it has far greater capacity for depth, especially in rule making.

Computers are good tools, but they are in no way superior to the human brain.

I think they are superior to chessboards in their capacity to challenge the human brain. Its a symbiotic relationship I think, the brain and our computing technology. We try to be smarter than the best we've been able to come up with almost constantly.

Was the cough sarcasm? If it wasn't you're probably right, I gave up days of my life to WarCrack...

Me too. I am in recovery, lucky I have a wife who would make me unplug after more then 6 hours. Now I am waiting for either Age of Conan or Warhammer. Currently Lord of the Rings Online is free till the 24th!

RAID!!!

Sorry...since God of War II came out and Paper Mario, I haven't logged much into WoW...I fear I am going through withdraws.
