There’s a big hole in Trump’s frantic spin about the Woodward revelations

Faced with the damning revelation that President Trump admitted he downplayed coronavirus despite fully grasping the urgency of the threat, he and his propagandists have fixated on the word “panic” in this quote, which Trump gave to Woodward on March 19:

Well I think Bob, really to be honest with you, I wanted to always play it down. I still like playing it down, because I don’t want to create a panic.

That came after Trump admitted on Feb. 7 that he understood coronavirus was airborne, making it particularly contagious, and even that “it’s also more deadly than even your strenuous flus.” Trump conceded he knew how bad the threat was and then admitted to downplaying it. Yet Trump’s defenders now insist his stated desire to avoid a “panic” demonstrates that he was operating from the belief that he good reason to downplay the virus — and that in so doing, he was acting in the public interest. But a look at the timeline before and after that admission to Woodward shows that even if Trump did want to avoid provoking “panic,” it was largely for self-absorbed reasons, not out of any discernible conception of what was good for the country. Throughout February, Trump was utterly obsessed with the impact that public news about coronanvirus was having on the markets.

Even if you grant that Trump worried to some extent about panicking the public in addition to hurting the markets and his reelection hopes — which is highly unlikely to have weighed heavily on him in the least — this only incriminates him further. The whole reason Trump’s own officials urged him to tell the full truth was so he’d use his presidential authority and megaphone to prep the American people for the excruciatingly difficult and self-sacrificing steps that would be needed to combat the virus and limit more loss of life. He refused to do that for weeks and weeks. And that helped allow the virus to rampage out of control here, ironically leading to an even worse economic lockdown than might otherwise have been necessary. Trump’s stated desire to avoid what he called a “panic” isn’t exonerating in the least. In yet another wretched perversity, this excuse reflects a harsh light right back on to the same depravity, malevolence and incompetence that characterized his mishandling of the pandemic all along, with unthinkable consequences. Even in seeking to avoid this panic, Trump was largely subverting the national interest to his own. And as we now know, he did this regardless of the immense human toll he fully understood it would all but certainly take.

Panic? Just last week Trump held a political rally in North Carolina where Trump and the crowd were without masks and without social distancing.

Trump never cared about the COVID death and misery he inflicted on this country. The 190,000 dead are political collateral damage. All he cares about November 3rd.

The fact that he even did the interview tells you all you need to know about Trump. He is so anxious to get attention that he spent hours being interviewed by someone who has already written one hit piece on him. But he is the stable genius.

Trump only cares about Nov 3 as for Himself. He only cared about candidacy as self-promo marketing to make money, not to be president. He makes outrageous statements to get attention, all about self-promo, all about Himself. Nothing else. Not about other people, their lives. Nothing. He has trampled others and the law under foot for his entire life and is at His apex and could very well continue getting away with it all. So far, most of the proof is that Trump will.

THIS is what the big hubbub is over? LMAO

Good for you. You laugh...Donald will be crying.

As hard as the WH tries to spin this as "for the good of the American people, the only thing they are spinning is their wheels.

Telling the truth about why the government didn’t want the general public to buy and wear masks at the time probably would have created an even worse panic than there already was.

Look, while I hesitate to even give your words enough respect to respond to them, I'll say it doesn't surprise me that someone like yourself, who thinks socialism allows for genocide, is also dumb enough to believe that Trump's negligence is no big deal. Clearly, you're immersed in a rich fantasy world where definitions don't matter and leadership means lying to the public for personal gain. Oye!

That was not a Trump creation though. That was a Task Force decision made in the early days when Pence was the guy leading the task force. Donnie did not like the optics of that and quickly stepped in. Pence looking to Presidential for Donnie's liking.

And ironically if he'd taken strong steps like European leaders he'd be better placed come election day. Sure there'd probably still be tens of thousands of deaths, but not hundreds of thousands. But by now rather than cases rising, they'd be falling. Rather than never leaving a devastating first wave, America might be dealing with a smaller, controlled second wave.

Instead he downplayed it to lessen damage to his beloved stock market and to manipulate people's perceptions as long as he could get away with. Instead he touted miracle cures that he thought bought him time in the short term, desperately looking for a quick and easy salve come November instead of taking the hard steps from the start.

Like the used car salesman who tells the angry customer bringing a piece of junk back to the lot, "A little tape and gum will fix it," he has no interest in long term solutions, just a quick turnaround then onto the next sucker. His early public denial of the virus was instinctive: "Oh that sound from the radiator? That's nothing, it'll go away after driving a while."

But it was also calculated to buy him time in an election year and to forestall the inevitable effects on his beloved Dow Jones and NASDAQ at a cost to public safety that only a malignant narcissist could ignore. His lack of understanding as to what was really important - people or "The EconomyTM" - caused him play the wrong hand. A real leader would have known it wasn't gambling but a necessary and calculated risk to begin with. Instead Trump went all in on the one that he thought would benefit him in the short term, not the country in the long term.

He's still doing it now with his "vaccine just around the corner" schtick.

Let me understand your argument, he kept quiet about the virus in February because he thought 190,000 dead would be good for his re-election?

You’re assuming he knows how to think.

?? Rouge seems rather intelligent. A bit confused on his ideology, but he should be able to explain his argument.

What was his lie?

Trump’s Dementia is Syphilis-related.

The only thing demented is Biden. Joe Riga quipped that voting for Biden was like going for a guy lost in a forest with his flashlight batteries almost gone.

Nope, but this might help - the same guy who doesn't want to 'spread panic'....
