How many countries have we conquered in the last 70 years?
Yeah...we conquered Iraq:roll:Hmm, one comes to mind quite easily.
Just because America is not an imperialist in the traditional sense does not mean it does not have similar effects. America's pressuring of other nations and its own foreign policy have devastating effects on other nations.
Yeah...we conquered Iraq:roll:
Iraq...and...uh...yeah, that's about it.
What else do you call invading a country, removing its government a militarily occupying it.
Jray said:And Latin America where the US has huge influence over what is happening.
Umm...occupation?
That's not the same as conquering it or having expansionist goals. There is NO support anywhere on the American political spectrum for making Iraq a part of the United States.
Our occupation of Iraq will be temporary. The American people won't stand for it for much longer, and our military can't take the strain for much longer. The US military just isn't built to be an imperial force.
The US has relatively little military influence in Latin America, and therefore is not expansionist or imperial. Our influence is primarily economic.
Its pathetic to see the direction the world is taking and the worst of it has happened during Americas "watch"..
I had a friend who bought a pleasant looking, comfy, old house. It was perfectly fine to live in but a year or so after buying it he realized that a termite infestation had set in and he looked at all of his options about what to do.
He considered the least invasive alternative, which would have been to simply call Orkin. But he was also getting complaints from the neighbors about his son's trumpet practicing disturbing their reverie. And in the mornings it was a real struggle for a family of four to share just one bathroom. And the neighbor on the other side had a dog that was constantly going over the wooden lathe weaved fence or under/between/through the otherwise thick shrubbery and getting into his yard and crapping there as though he was telling all other dogs that this was HIS bathroom.
So with everything considered he decided to completely remodel the house inside and out, top to bottom, wiring, plumbing, insulation, sound proofing and solar energy cells and landscaping.
And though I wouldn't have done it, he liked the fact that it was in a very historic neighborhood and that remodeling not only made it everything he could need, it also made the house viable for at least another 100 years and it retained the look and feel of that once high society neighborhood from the turn of the 19th/20th Century.
However, the problem with all that was that the remodeling came about at the expense of great inconvenience and disruption to the family's normal way of life. Their youngest once commented that she hated the house and whenever mom and dad were talking about the progress of the work she would sometimes pee on herself (think of the scene in the Exorcist when Regan tells the astronaut at the dinner party he's going to die up there and then she urinates on the floor) or do something else to make them stop talking about what she could only understand was a terrible disruption and bad.
She thought that the remodeling was bad and that the best thing to do would be to just stop mom and dad from talking about it and then everything would be alright.
She couldn't understand that the only way things would ever be normal again would be if the job was finished.
And once it was finished then everything WAS better. Some minor problems always arise even in the best case scenario. But, they are an example of how a short term inconvenience (and truly, who here that complains about the war has been anything more than intellectually affected?) can result in a much better outcome than if nothing at all had been done.
And it also goes to show that when our war protesters don't understand what's going on but they just don't like it they often act like babies and get really pissy.
I bet that the corporations making profit off of this war would love you.
They would kill you, stuff you full of feathers, and call you their mascot.
Right, but we are there to set-up a government in the Middle East and because there is oil there.
Imperialism can be economic.
And what do the Jihadists call you?
Infidel? "Useful Idiot" American? Or brother?

Many persons on the left side of the political spectrim have a hard time understanding how persons on the right side can possibly be sane if they believe what they believe.
Conversely, many persons on the right side of the political spectrim have a hard time understanding how persons on the left side can possibly be sane if they believe what they believe.
Thus we have unending debates.
Uhhh,
I'd probably call the holcaust the worst of it.
Please describe what you mean by "the worst of it"
I saw a documentary the other day on what Euro's think of America, and it's pretty much all deragatory. Yet there all wearing "GAP" hoodies or Nike shoes.
In other words, if you own any levi's or ever drink coca-cola, thanks for your part in expanding the american empire.
Let's see. Under "America's watch"...
- The amount of war casualties worldwide per capita is at an all-time low.
- Medical advances (mostly researched and developed in the US, and all driven by free market capitalism) have nearly doubled the life expectancy in the Western world over the past century, and show no sign of slowing down.
- Two of the most brutal expansionist threats the world has ever seen, Nazism and communism, were defeated.
- Free trade, convenient transportation, and information technology have exploded, allowing businesses to utilize resources and employees from all over the world.
- A greater percentage of the world's population lives in a democracy than at any time in human history.
You're right, the world is ****ed. And it's all America's fault.
I agree it is fair to criticize some of America's actions taken during its "watch"; include the recent blunder in Iraq.
But I will be happy to defend America's watch with the watches of other nations who had dominant power or sought it; including European nations like Rome Spain France Portugal England Germany and Russia.
Given the military superiority the US has had, it is not unfair to say that the US has been the least agressive, most responsible, and most tolerant and fair dominant power in history.
Or do you want to debate a nation you contend is a better example of a dominant power?
How many countries have we conquered in the last 70 years?
Thats all well and good, but the foundation of the human society is in great decline. Not only are we all slaves(the ones who havent bought themself freedom), but the utmost free in the world are poor Africans, while Americans who proclaim themself richest and most powerful is a nation full of slaves, the slaves who actually take the heaviest burdon by working all the time.
Maximus Zeebra said:This is just one thing, we are all prisoners in our own society, but the other thing is how we live our lives, and how little the good values of christianity and Jesus matters to us at this time of the world. Not only have we all become selfish petty bastards who care about nothing else than ourselves and the illusion that the hunt to free ourselves from slavery is.
Maximus Zeebra said:Good for you? Or is it? what has the modern money system become, this which Americans loves more than anyone else, the chase for most money and our own way out of our pathetic lives.
Maximus Zeebra said:How much action and harsh reality do people get to see these days anyways? Havent life become predictable and boring compared to life only a few hundred years ago?
Maximus Zeebra said:Even if you manage to free yourelf from slavery by obtaining enough money, your life still sucks because the world has become nothing but a place of rotten values, selfishness. The world richest guy passing the worlds poorest guy on the street, without even being able to comprehend or emphasise with his world.
Maximus Zeebra said:This is just the start, we are all going to ****ing hell if this continue, that I can tell you all for sure.. International politics have become a competition of flashing dicks in the shower rather than caring about whats really going on. And if some kind of world conflict is not near when Russia is provocing the UK more and more and savaging scandinavian Airspace, then the economy is about to completely collapse.
So where are things really heading?
(this is the short version with a mention of the few of many things, and if you happen not to be able to see any of this, then lucky you until you have to manage when the world has collapsed)

Umm Americans CHOOSE to work more than people in most other countries, just like Europeans CHOOSE to have more leisure time at the cost of productivity. It's simply a different cultural priority, and neither is right or wrong. Try to take off your ethnocentric blinders before you make such ridiculous assertions.
Well, if one doesnt count those nations which soverignty you have taken at one point or the other then only a few.. Iraq, Afghanistan most recently. You tried Vietnam as well. Then you took soverignty from dusins of middle and south American nations, and a few other nations as well.
