This is the last blow to the traditional GOP. Never thought I'd see the day when most of the Democratic Party seems more moderate than the Republican, but here we are. The last leg of the Grand Old Party is closing shop.

"This is a volatile time in American journalism and politics," Hayes wrote. "Many media outlets have responded to the challenges of the moment by prioritizing affirmation over information, giving into the pull of polarization and the lure of clickbait."

I do not believe the weekly standard ever amounted to clickbait monetization. Sad to see it go. But social media is apart of it's death as well. The titans who ran it will still have a large voice and following on those platforms challenging those who want to put their opinions before facts or what's cool/hip over standards and practiced principles.

The Weekly Standard, a conservative magazine critical of Trump, to shutter after 23 years

The title actually is very meaningful as a reflection of today's GOP. TWS was mainly a mainstream Republican rag, and the modern day GOP is Trumpism. The Weekly Standard did not adopt Trumpism so it's target audience is mostly gone. The "standard" has changed, while The Weekly Standard failed to change with it.

I think that most of the writers will do fine however. They will be scooped up by other mags or will end up with other gigs.

Yup one could say Republican Standards are dead. As long as their people say something they like, they could care less if they practice the exact opposite of what they preach. This goes against everything the Standard was about.

I guess the readers will have to move over to Breitbart. Have fun with that!

But I'm tellin' ya': Now is the time for Dems to open the tent wide for principled, sensible, reasonable, conservatives. There's room. I'll take 'em. Hell, George Will announced on CNN last night that he is going to vote Dem!

I actually never subscribed to the magazine but mostly follow all of it's writers on twitter. That wouldn't be a very smooth transition.

No, it wouldn't! That's why I wrote it.

BTW, did you see the lines I edited into my post, after you quoted it? Any opinion?

Another thread about how the GOP, by proxy in this instance, is dead.

The GOP isn't dead, it's simply been transformed. The Weekly Standard no longer fits the new GOP.

Both parties are going through transitions. The GOP with the Trump extreme and the Democrats with the Pogressive/Socialist extreme.

My comment was based on the tenor of the thread, not what is actually occurring. We get dozens of these “the GOP is dead” threads weekly if not daily.

The GOP will survive this, although it may have to splinter off the extremists to do so.

And the Democrats will survive added progressivism. Problem is, more and more people will flee both and be left with no real party that represents them. Which, really, might not be a bad thing.

I’m in that position right now, in that the GOP is the closest but no longer represents the majority of my views.

The bad thing is that we have a two party system that is at the root of our governing foundation. Our system would not work as Parliament works. So in that way, it is a bad thing.

A shame. Fascism has all but taken over the Republican party. There, you're either with tRump or against him.

I've been saying this for maybe 4 or 5 years, but now would seem to be a great time to start a 3rd party.

Hell, call it the Independents or Moderates or some such, keep out the extremes, and see were it goes. Put an emphasis on anti-corruption/anti-swamp for good measure, and it might go far ...

These are astute observations, and Maurice Duverger & I very much agree!

Trust me, as much as I love and respect our constitution, there's been times lately I wish our government was parliamentarian in form. There'd be less yo-yo'ing back and forth, between opposing party administrations. I also miss the days of JFK Dems & Rockefeller Republicans, but sadly those days seem long gone.

The demise of TWS is a sad event. I was a subscriber for years. It was a source of thoughtful commentary. And of course Stephen F. Hayes is a DePauw man, so there was that extra touch of class.

I am pretty sure it has never been profitable but rather depended on endowments by wealthy conservatives. That would be the case of most publications like the weekly standard regardless of whether it's liberal or conservative.

I'm glad it's gone, and Bill Kristol along with it. Although, he'll continue to travel the neocon think tank circuit, collecting speaking fees for mimicking horrendous anti-American propaganda. Maybe the NYT will hire him to write OP-ED columns. He's one of the tribe after all, and his father was a prominent member of the American Communist Party. Very fine people.

The GOP is just going back to it's conservative roots. The change came when the Bush/Clinton generation. The Bush clan were pretty chummy with the Clintons. They agreed with the "new world order" philosophy, in which "we're all citizens of the world" over American exceptionalism.

I subscribed to WS for several years but over that last year they became more fixated on adhering to rigid conservative principles (at least, THEIR interpretation of classic conservative principles) than in any compromising, pragmatic approach to gaining power.

Hell, I miss the Reagan and Tip days. Those 2 could talk over a cup of coffee, (or something stronger), and compromise on all kinds of stuff. These days, border security is something both parties could agree on, yet both are more concerned about "winning" instead of protecting the country.

It had been for sale for a song, but no one wanted it......I find that interesting.

No. There were buyers who wanted it. The owners did not want to sell because they want the subscriber list for their other publication, the Washington Examiner.

The Weekly Standard is gone

Bull, Hayes had been given permission to look for a buyer several months ago, he worked hard looking, he found no one.
