The war in Afghanistan: 15 years with no end in sight [W:116] [W:170]

re: The war in Afghanistan: 15 years with no end in sight [W:116]

Well, this individual seems to believe that we're in Afghanistan to plunder it of its many valuable resources such as dirt, rocks, and hills, so....

He claimed in the OP that the war was started due to imperialist aggression. Which is ridiculous, obviously.....

Did you support the war in Afghanistan while Bush was president?

re: The war in Afghanistan: 15 years with no end in sight [W:116]

The US restored opium production coincidentally at the same time heroin use in the US skyrocketed. Natural gas, copper, iron, gold, lithium are just some of the billions and billions of dollars worth of stuff to be had there but most importantly the strategic location of the country.

re: The war in Afghanistan: 15 years with no end in sight [W:116]

Israel isn't comitting genocide against the Palestinians.

Agreed. All the Palestinians have to do is to stop shooting rockets into Israel and that'd at least 1/2 the problem.
Granted, the Israelis need to stop building settlements on lands they don't own, that'd be at least the other 1/2 of the problem.

re: The war in Afghanistan: 15 years with no end in sight [W:116]

What on that list looks worse than American actions worldwide? Fact is, Iran is a stable, conservative society and should (and probably will) become te best ally the US has in the Middle East. Israel aside, because Israel.
You lynched Saddam Hussein. Failed in Afghanistan. Assad has died on the vine. My opinion? Just get the hell out. Pull out all your people fom the whole region, all the hardware you can carry, and get out. And never go back. And make an ally of Iran.

Iran doesn't want to be an American ally. Iran wants its own little empire. Saudi and Israel would go ballistic. Russia has Iran's back.

Saddam was a snake who managed to hold things together through sheer brutality. Once he'd died things would have fallen apart just as bad had Iraqi Freedom not taken place.

Point of fact. Afghanistan is sitting on a great wealth of mineral deposits.

But that doesn't mean that the US is in Afghanistan due to imperialist aggression.

It should have been called Operation Petrodollar Restoration. The US didn't take Iraq for the oil itself, just to make sure it was sold for dollars.

The US took Iraq because Saddam was an idiot and did everything in his power to look like he was connected to AQ.

Umm. Err. No. Iran is exporting terrorism in the region, they are regularly supplying Hezbollah with rockets, arms, and money, for one example. Threatening not only our closest ME ally, but also the peace in the region.

Earlier, some posted a map, Iraq and Afghanistan on either side of Iran. If you ever hope that Iran will honor the Obama's and Kerry's nuclear deal, it'd be best to have a decent sized military forces in both those countries.

I think it's the other way around. The US did everything in its power to make Saddam look like he was connected to al-qaeda.

re: The war in Afghanistan: 15 years with no end in sight [W:116]

Me? Yeah, I did. I still do, actually.

Why?

The Taliban isn't going to close shop and quit, there's no shortage of men who are willing to join. In 15 years we haven't put a dent in that.

As far as "plundering rocks and dirt", we're not over there for that reason. We're over there for this one:
Companies Profiting The Most From War

War makes billions of dollars for arms companies & oil companies. These companies donate money to political candidates who then keep the wars going. War in the 21st century is a business.

No one over here gives a flying f*ck about the Taliban, they're just used as the patsy that keeps the money train rolling.

re: The war in Afghanistan: 15 years with no end in sight [W:116]

That's just sad, then. So much potential wealth yet the population has lived in squalor.

Yeah, that's true.

But the country is going to need some sort of security and stability before they can make the deals with Western industrial nations to extract that wealth and better support the nation and it's population. Western industrial concerns aren't really interested when the Taliban and / or Al Qaeda threaten to take whatever infrastructure is built, and / or take the entire nation an d/ or blow the new infrastructure up as part of their terrorism campaign.

Having US military training and support can only help further the goal of extracting and benefiting from their mineral wealth.

Kinda chicken and egg sort of thing.

re: The war in Afghanistan: 15 years with no end in sight [W:116]

Iran is buddy buddy with Putin and Russia.

They weren't really an ally even when Reagan sold them parts under the table. The mullahs really don't like us, and vice versa.

Parts? He sold them weapons. He used the money he made from the sales to finance a dirty war in an insignifigant Central American country.
What do you want from an ally? You say Iran is buddy-buddy with Putin but I doubt you even know what that means.I sure as hell don't. Are you talking about trade agreements and military bases or are you talking about formal embassy dinners or Facebook 'friends' or what?

The Taliban provided aid and support to Osama Bin Laden. Osama's guys attacked the US and killed thousands of innocent people. The Taliban refused to hand him over. They terrorized Afghanistan, pulling **** that the Khmer Rouge would have been proud of. That kinda shut can't be tolerated.

Especially attacking innocent civillians---in America, no less.

The US provided aid and support to Osama bin Laden too. But that was okay cause he was fighting the Soviet Union back then right?

That's true. Hopefully at some point they'll be stabilized enough to enjoy it. But that won't happen if we pull out and leave our friends hanging, you know?

re: The war in Afghanistan: 15 years with no end in sight [W:116]

When did the Taliban attack innocent civilians in America?

The Taliban supported and hid OBL. OBL's network attacked and killed innocent civvies. The Taliban helped them by providing a secure base and tried to help them escape punishment for their crimes.

He sold them parts for their Phantoms as I recall.

Iran's Air Force is heavily Russian made. Russia sells them a vast amount of military equipment, there's a number of trade deals, Iran is thinking about joined the EEU....

Osama didn't crash any airliners into Soviet buildings to kill thousands of civillians.

He didn't even really get his big boost until the Soviets invaded.

re: The war in Afghanistan: 15 years with no end in sight [W:116]

He never claimed to have done that to the WTC either.

Osama bin Laden moved to Pakistan within 1 year of 9/11 taking place. Pakistani intelligence knew about it, and worked with bin Laden to keep him secure.

bin Laden lived in peace for 10 years in Pakistan, before being killed

According to your logic, we aren't even fighting a war in the right country.
