The US is becoming a police state. If I was young I'd seriously think about leaving

The Soviet Union banned guns and abortion was legal in 1920 in the Soviet Union, so it's anyone's guess what the OP is talking about
Abortion was legal when your country was formed, too. In fact, it was so routine that's probably why the Founders just ignored the issue- they never imagined the government would get involved. It was just between a woman and her doctor or midwife.

You are not alone either. Many Americans long for a powerful govt. that will control our every move with any means necessary. It is how the weak and feeble minded believe they will inherit the earth. They are dead wrong though.
Conservatives just love a big, strong Daddy state, the stronger the better. They love laws, too, laws that the Daddy state can use to regulate behaviour, punishing transgressors.

Yesterday's decision to overturn Roe and roll back woman's rights to the 1960's has only reinforced my belief that the US is on the fast track to becoming a total police state like the Soviet Union was in the same era. And I think Thomas has made it clear that the ultra-conservative wing of the SC doesn't intend to stop with abortion. It intends to go on and reverse contraception, certain forms of sexual relations between consenting adults, gay marriage and God knows what else. Count of the Republicans gaining control of the Presidency and Congress in 2024 and then they will get to work outlawing abortion nationally, dismantling Obamacare and Medicare and replacing them with nothing, shredding the safety net for the poor and passing more tax cuts for the wealthy. And that's just for starts.

I am an old man so it's too late for me, but if I were just starting my life I'd seriously think about getting out of the US and starting life in a more progressive freer country where the loony Christian conservatives haven't taken over. I think that as conditions continue to deteriorate in the US life here will become unbearable, no different from what Russia and some of the 3rd world countries are going through now. It won't be a pretty sight.
That is an amusing rant, however apparently ignorant about the fact that most European nations have similar restrictions on abortions.

It's an interesting angle...

Yep. This angle will play out wherever applicable. Gonna get interesting. Maybe vicious.

Non-believers should file as well, if they already haven't.

Wow, so much hyperbolic pessimism.

Well not to worry - Dems have been threatening to leave the US for decades now when something doesn't go quite the way they would like and yet... they're still here, ruing the fact that they live in the greatest nation in the world.

There are two factions at war with each other right now. Those who want multi cultural democracy and those who wish to keep the constitutional republic.

Bizarre. We've always been a multi-cultural democratic constitutional republic.

The two factions are Christian nationalists and everyone else.

No we have not. We have been a constitutional federal republic, that is what the United States was formed as. Those who defend the republic, be the republican, libertarian, and left behind democrat's. The multi cultural socialist democrats whom wish to transform the country into something similar to what is in Europe, these would be the progressive democrats.

This is beyond old.

The US is #2 and #4.

Democracy denotes the source of power (the people), along with other characteristics (rule of law, e.g.). Democracy is how we choose our government.

A federal republic is a form of government. #2 in the list, as opposed to a parliamentary system.

Since you're lost on the difference between methods of forming a government and the structures a government can take, I won't waste my time on the rest.

This tired old trope is a sign of poor education. Best to keep it under your hat.

You do know that states are free to pass laws allowing abortions, correct? No "policy state" involved. More like democracy.

I got my 2nd passport...

man...SUCH histrionics over a court decision that merely said abortion isnt a Constitutionally protected right and that states have the authority to govern themselves...you know...like the Constitution originally intended.

ALL that has happened is that the court has corrected bad decisions in the past and the representatives in Congress failed to act to actually secure the 'rights' people are no so desperately complaining about. The courts did not ban abortion. The courts arent goign to act to ban gay marriage. The courts arent going to act to ban contraception. Athe very worst, the court MAY turn the decision of gay marriage back to the states and turn the responsibility for contraception back to the individual. Where abortifacients are involved, individuals in some states may have to choose from 24 other types of effective contraception. Oh the horror!
>>>>>>>>>>Athe very worst, the court MAY turn the decision of gay marriage back to the states

And what do you think the red states will decide to do about gay marriage?

Good Bye

Overturning Roe will just necessitate another layer of bureaucracy in the red states, the creation of miscarriage squads to investigate when women are pregnant one day and then are not the next. I foresee hostile neighbors reporting that the woman next door is no longer pregnant and the police knocking at the door late at night inquiring as to what happened to the fetus. If they don't like the responses they'll whip out the handcuffs and escort the woman down to the station for booking until an appearance before the abortion court judge who will order them to undergo a psychiatric evaluation and a medical exam to determine if the woman stuck a coat hanger up her vagina. Incarcerations will skyrocket and the prison industrial complex will love that of course. All this will serve to drive already bankrupt state governments into insolvency, and frankly it will be exactly what they deserve.

I am 85, so I know where you are coming from (as they used to say back in the day).

For you, it's "Christian conservatives."

For me, it's the horrific violent crime committed by individuals that lack any decency or even a conscience.
Well whatever it is old geezers cry about, they went quietly along with every ****ery for decades. Leaving your children nothing but debt, war, a nearly destroyed planet and a bunch of billionaires. Yeah thanks. Thanks for nothing. I hope your kids piss on your graves

It does appear that way, but I have faith in the electorate. I prefer to see this as the end of the Republican Party

Besides, why leave? It's my ****ing country, too. I could leave. I won't lie, I've thought about it. But there are people here who need me, and it's my country, too.

I've said it before: short-term, I'm a pessimist. Long term? There's only so much of this shit this country's going to take, and we're armed.

If the Supreme court starts using the Bible for the foundation of law, maybe the next decision will be ." - Psalm 137:9)
"Happy those who seize your children and smash them against a rock."
We are a Christian county not a Jewish one, we can even eat a ham sandwich 😉

I hope you are both right but I have my doubts. My gut feeling is that the US will continue to become more and more repressive. Case in point: people in severe pain used to be able to go to their PCP and get a prescription for an opiate to manage their pain responsibly. Now, no PCP will touch an opiate for fear of being targeted by the DEA. They will immediately refer you to a pain clinic, that will in turn tell you they want you to try all the diagnostic and surgical procedures first and then when those have failed they will then and only then talk to you about the possibility of pain meds. In most cases they won't prescribe pain meds even then, preferring to prescribe some stronger NSAID's instead. Even hospitals now are just giving their post-op patients Ibuprofen, no narcotics.

Weird?

Maybe that's because "opiates" are really not that good for you. That proper identification and treatment would be better than possible "dependency" on "prescribed" addiction?

Seems to me we often forget that doctor's, especially in private practice, often get "kick-backs" for prescribing drugs.

That many people "in pain" should be seeking options other than "medication."

So, the fact that your physician may not be into "feeding" a possibly developing addiction might be a good thing.

Democracy and constitutional republic are not at odds with each other because democracy is always representative democracy when applied on a national level.
There is no such thing as direct or pure democracy at the state level, or even "city-state" level...not since Athens 2500 years ago.
You and others like you have been told this innumerable times.

That you are so allergic to facts is orwellian.
“The Party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command.”
