I think you should take note of the calm demeanour of the captain as they fully expected to get some attention from Russia and China during this deployment as why wouldn't they send aircraft out to test the newest and largest ships in the UK fleet?
The carriers were never in real danger as they're protected by destroyers and the aircraft they carry and a few enemy aircraft at a time will not pose a threat.

I've been following the deployment and it's been a great success and has seen training with all sorts in the area.

It's a radar system bolted onto a helicopter.
It's how the UK has done this for ages and works well and can be taken off the aircraft if they need it for humanitarian missions.
