Basically, to achieve control over people well beyond the useful life of the restrictions. There's a school of thought that people enjoy too much freedom, too high a living standard. These people in some cases wish to punish the West for gaining affluence. This is not new; they feel virtuous by making a subliminal effort to punish the population of the West for the sin of licentiousness, affluence and waste, to wear the hairshirt if you will. See the Club of Rome report, written over a period between 1968 and 1972, affiliated with MIT (link). This punitive ideology has been kicking around for a while.I've never understood the logic behind the idea that public health measures are a power grab. To what end, beyond saving lives?
Of course, these leaders exempt themselves, saying that some people can be "trusted" but not the average Joe.
