My wife was asking me why there is such a long transition period between the election and the inauguration (almost three months). I explained that the timeline was drawn up when Electoral College electors traveled by horseback or carriage to cast their votes and new administration officials faced the same travel limitations. In other words, it is an artifact of a bygone era and ought to be updated to reflect the changes in travel technology.

But OMG! We can't change the constitutionally mandated timeline! It would destroy America!

January is also a good time to take office.

Three months exist to sort through any close election and challenges.

I would be to hem it in a little and have the inauguration on the Solstice, December 21st.

Then your new guy isn't wasting any time waiting in January.

Nobody will complain if Trump moves out sooner. Better to be on the move when debtors start calling.
