Malcom X was the top aide to the head of Nation of Islam , Elijah Muhammed. In my opinion, Elijah was a pretty despicable con man, quite corrupt, which didn't prevent Malcom being an effective supporter. But Malcolm eventually began to dislike things about Elijah, and Elijah was getting jealous of Malcolm as a rival.

This came to a head, of all things, with the JFK assassination. Elijah didn't want bad press for anything negative about JFK being said and ordered everyone to say nothing about it.

That didn't stop Malcolm, who said he viewed the assassination as chickens coming home to roost, and added that when that happened, it didn't make him sad but glad. This caused a big public outcry, and Elijah suspended Malcom from any public comments for 90 days, which became indefinite, which is what led Malcom to leave the organization.

This break led to Malcom denouncing Elijah, and the Nation calling for Malcom's murder, and eventually committing it.

It's a question how things might have been different if not for the JFK incident leading to the break.
