McClatchy | Guantanamo: Beyond the Law

An eight-month McClatchy investigation of the detention system created after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks has found that the U.S. imprisoned innocent men, subjected them to abuse, stripped them of their legal rights and allowed Islamic militants to turn the prison camp at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba into a school for jihad.

Who cares, we're only doing it to Muslims... Aren't we? :2razz:

In all seriousness though it's a sad state of affairs that Gitmo is still open. One thing me and Mr. Obama are at odds about.

You know I wouldn't mind America doing it, if you guys just came out and said "you know what world, we actually don't care about human rights anymore, they are so yesterday"

Many people have been held there for a long time and proven innocent.

Simply not acceptable.

And yet, here I am, posting about it still, because Obama failed to honor the promise he made in his campaign. Just call me Quixote.

The continued existence of Gitmo is a black mark on this administration.

It just goes to show that it doesn't matter how bright or promising a Presidential candidate is. He has no real power once he's on the inside.

Or, it could mean that no matter how bright and promising a presidential candidate is, he's still a politician.

I am constantly amazed that people are still shocked when politicians lie.

So why is it that "Yes we can" hasn't? This was a campaign promise....a travesty of the Bush Administration that he was going to fix....why hasn't he? What's so hard about closing the place? Let all the innocent folks go and lock the doors....right?

We need to send some politicians and camera-chasers and liars to Gitmo instead of innocent Muslims

Ah, but you don't hear about "innocent Muslims" anymore. Instead, you hear proclamations from the Justice Department about how they are going to be tried and convicted, and if on the slim chance they're acquitted, they're going to be re-arrested and re-tried for . . . something else.

These are good questions, and they deserve to be asked. I'm very disappointed by Obama's failure to deliver.

And what about Congress? They have real power, but oh wait...

A series of White House directives placed "suspected enemy combatants" beyond the reach of U.S. law or the 1949 Geneva Conventions' protections for prisoners of war. President Bush and Congress then passed legislation that protected those detention rules.
...it hard to say you were wrong.

Congress and the White House have been under Democratic control since January 2009.

So what exactly is the obstacle to closing Gitmo?

Within the same party? The Democrats either lack party discipline (which is rarely the case for them), or they lack the commitment.
