A political reckoning in Sri Lanka as debt crisis grows

How Four Powerful Brothers Broke an Island Nation

The Rajapaksa clan has dominated Sri Lankan politics one way or another in the 2000s, and while being temporarily out of power 2015-20, they were able to return with a landslide victory in the 2020 election. Now Sri Lanka's economy is in complete ruins, and everyone blames the Rajapaksa brothers (it's their economic policies since the mid 00s that are now backfiring). But will this be enough to topple them? They have governed the country for a long time and have deep roots in the state machine.

A good example of the mismanaging, Sri Lanka borrowed heavily from China to build the Port of Hambantota, but couldn't repay the loan and had to agree to lease the port to China for 99 years.

Sri Lanka defaults on debt for first time in its history

The results of Rajapaksa clan's economical mismanagement is now evident. Sri Lanka defaults. And Mahinda is out, so one of the Rajapaksas has left government. The others will probably soon follow. There is nothing to rob anymore.
